When you’re the exciting new candidate, you’re likely to focus on the endless possibilities, and optimism rules the day. But when the polls turn against you, the fear of failure starts to weigh more heavily. Despite whatever they go on to do, the stigma of losing can be nearly impossible to shake. For example, a Los Angeles Times headline last summer read “Failed presidential candidate Al Gore attacks winning candidate Obama over his environment policies.” The story had nothing to do with campaigning, yet Gore was still branded as a loser.

....How could they misread reality when there’s so much information (i.e. nonstop polling) about how they’re doing? Well, having so much information makes it easy to evaluate a situation in a way that reflects well on ourselves and is consistent with our beliefs. Losing a primary might be interpreted in a candidate’s mind as a better-than-expected result (still a defeat, but not as bad as the naysayers predicted!) or even as irrelevant (especially in the states where delegates are allocated proportionally to the share of the vote).
Fortunately, some of these pathologies are avoidable. If candidates set objective benchmarks for themselves before campaigning, it would be harder for them to spin results in their favor.
But candidates are still human — no matter how smart and capable they might be. When Bob Dole said last month that it was “getting close to the point” where Santorum should decide whether to drop out, he acknowledged his own difficulty in giving up his pursuit for the 1988 GOP nomination. “As much as you don’t want to do it, sometimes you have to face reality.”
And the reality is, we already have a Republican nominee: Mitt Romney.

Who is running the LDS church these days? I know Romney is an important bishop, but is he their head guy now?
He is a flagrant supporter of gay marriage and taxpayer funded baby killing. Does the Mormon Church approve of that?
Apparently. Because Romney probably couldn’t have gotten his current lead without 95% of the Mormons in the country turning out to vote for him, especially in the key Mormon states that vote early.
Does the LDS Church really want to be led and personified by a gay activist baby killer? Is that the image of themselves they want to spread? It’s not the way I had previously thought about them. But I’m afraid that this latest election cycle is demonstrating that they are more interested in bowing down to their leaders than in what they have historically taught to be the truth.
The Democrats base being stupid people they are more obvious about the monsters.

I’m no Romney fan.
If Romney had Santorum’s number of delegates I’d say Romney should drop out. The other two (I was a Newt guy) should have already gotten out. The voters have spoken, it’s time to take on Obama.
Some people think the race is about them rather than the country. That would be Paul, Santorum, Gingrich and the people who want them to stay in.
They are all helping Obama at this point. But that doesn’t bother them.
They always talk like this. After RFK announced in 1968, they put pressure on Gene McCarthy to step down. When he didn’t, the Kennedy-klan played rough, to the point where McCarthy was determined not to. After Kennedy was killed, his followers tried to take over, and when he refused to deal, they began putting out a lot of stuff that McCarthy was supposedly saying. The furthest Gene was willing to go was to agree to step down in favor of Teddy, but the Kennedy bunch made further stipulations that McCarthy could not accept, and then they bad mouthed him to one and all. Many defected to Hubert and others to McGovern, but all blamed McCarthy for not “leading.” Much of what happened reminds me of what happened to Palin in 2008. Many in the McCarthy camp were double dealers.And they wondered why McCarthy endorsed no one until October. He had found that Nixon was more open to peace than Hubert.
I want em all the way to the end, so we have a chance of picking a real republican (and hopefully, a conservative).
From the point of a conservative, I also prefer keeping Mitt's feet to the fire until the Convention. If he was handed the nomination by default tomorrow, by the time the convention came around, he'll have juggled the etch-a-sketch and lost the base. An unenthusiastic convention would kill his chances for November. The only hope with a Mitt candidacy is if he ever recognizes that he can lose the base and that losing the base would cost him the election. However, I can't see him every saying anything that would excite the base.
If the base is involved in the convention, I think Romney believes that even if their candidate loses, they will have sunk so much effort into the Republican/conservative cause that they will support Romney to avoid having to cut their losses.
But, this year I'm cutting my losses. I'd vote for Romney, but only if he's running as Sarah's VP.
Because it's not their (or anyone else's, for that matter) role in life to do what might please you.

If a candidate will only give me the same result as Obama, only slower, I'd rather have a quicker resolution. Again my choice.

Over the next few years, McCarthy's views had changed so much that in 1979, he addressed the annual convention of the Young Americans for Freedom. However, as he got up to speak, some of us chanted, "Joe! Joe! Joe!"--for another McCarthy.
