Obama on Why Michelle Was a Working Mom (at $316K Per Year): ‘We Didn't Have the Luxury for Her Not to Work’ By Terence P. Jeffrey April 9, 2012

(CNSNews.com) - Speaking Friday at what the administration called “The White House Forum on Women and the Economy,” President Barack Obama said that after his two daughters were born, he and his wife—both Harvard Law School graduates—could not afford the “luxury” of having her stay home with the children.

In 2005, when Obama began serving in the U.S. Senate (and his daughters turned 5 and 7), he and his wife were earning a combined annual income of $479,062. Barack Obama was paid a salary of $162,100 by the U.S. taxpayers, and Michelle Obama was paid $316,962 to handle community affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center.

“And then there is the woman who once advised me at the law firm in Chicago where we met,” Obama said of his wife in his Friday talk. “Once she gave me very good advice. That's why I decided to marry her. And once Michelle and I had our girls, she gave it her all to balance raising a family and pursuing a career--and something that could be very difficult on her, because I was gone a lot.

“Once I was in the state legislature, I was teaching, I was practicing law, I'd be traveling,” he said. “And we didn't have the luxury for her not to work.

Oh, poor babies. He makes it sound like she was flipping burgers at McDonalds. And the shepple nod and wring their hands over this understanding, compassionate leader of all men.
Barf.

Her job was SO important, and she was SO uniquely qualified for her hospital job that to this very day, they have not been able to fill her rather large shoes. The quid for the pro quo was a job for her in exchange for state funding from him. Welcome to Ill-Annoy, where the secret handshake has something to do with cash crossing one’s palm. The dirty politics have been successfully transplanted to the White Crib. There is always a quid for the pro quo.

If you can get cushy jobs at over $300K a year, she could work 2 months a year and stay home on that $50K for 10 months.

She made 316K? I wonder if any doctors at that hospital made 316K.

Well, you were spending a lot of evenings in gay bars when the babies were little. You could have chosen to spend more time at home, but Larry Sinclair and the others beckoned...

That 317K moochelle made in one year, would have lasted 15 years for me. I did the math. Granted if I had two kids, that amount may have lasted maybe 5 years.

Nope, no pity from me.

And yet, somehow,I have managed to be a stay at home mom for my hubby’s entire military career. And...um...let me tell you, he makes far less than $160,000 a year...and for the past 3 years we’ve been in the DC metro. I wonder how we manage to survive!!! Oh right, no wagyu and lobster parties, no elegant vacations, no Hawaiian Christmas adventures...and darn it, my shoes usually come from Target.
They had it sooooo bad, I feel soooooo sorry for them. I should totally vote for them so I can help dear Queen Michelle continue to stay at home (occasionally) with her kids. Even though another 4 years of them might make it so that I have to get a job, just so that we can eat. NOT

With all due respect, Mr. President, it’s not about “luxury”, it’s about “priority”.

My wife stayed home and raised our children no matter how little money I made to ensure that they didn’t grow up to believe that gov’t was the solution to any of their problems.

My children put their trust in God, hard work, and family. They see their parents as the ultimate authority in their lives, and they see God as the ultimate authority in their parent’s lives.

They know that they will be held accountable for their actions in this life or in the next and they would like to be able to reap the benefits of their hard work and good behavior and not be forced to subsidize the poor judgment and slothfullness of others.

He's such a bald-faced liar. If you can't make it on $160K, putting you between the top 12% and the top 3% of income earners according to the IRS, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.

On her income alone they were the Top 1%.

Really? They couldn’t live on $162,000 and change? Many Americans live on much, much less.

How does he explain that to “his” voters?
