A homeowner shot and killed a burglary suspect Monday morning in the southeast Dallas neighborhood of Pleasant Grove and two more suspects were in custody.
The shooting happened at about 11 a.m. in the 7300 block of Vallejo Drive, near Jim Miller and Bruton roads.
According to police, three youngsters rang the doorbell and then ran to the back of the home, prompting the homeowner to call 911.
The trio then allegedly kicked in the back door and entered the home, where the unidentified resident opened fire, killing 14-year-old Luis Avila.
Two other 13 and 14-year-old suspects fled the scene and were later arrested. They face burglary charges, police said.
Neighbors said they saw a couple of kids who looked like they were up to no good running from the house. They also heard five gunshots, a pause and then three more shots.
"This is a calm neighborhood. This is like the first time something like this has ever happened," said Sarah Trevino. "I was surprised but I mean it was self defense. I understand why he would do that. I mean, I would have probably done the same thing too."
Avila and at least one other suspect reportedly attend John B. Hood Middle School. The school sent a letter home Monday afternoon letting parents know a student had died.
They probably wont do this, but I hope they have a talk with the students about how he died and what he did to cause his death.

I have long believed that schools should have a prominent bulletin board called the Wall of Stupidity. Every time some kid breaks his neck doing a skateboard trick, everytime a kid sticks a roman candle up his butt and lights it, every time a kid chuggs a liter of whiskey, every time a kid commits a burglary and gets shot -- put it on the wall.
Actions have consequences. Sometimes things don't go as expected. Risky behavior sometimes causes heartbreak.
Kids don't seem to understand this (they never have) but maybe it would help if we made an effort to wave it in their face and say, "See? What this kid did was dumb!"
“The school sent a letter home Monday afternoon letting parents know a student had died.”
I wonder if it was in English.
So sad, another honor roll student killed for simply enjoying his hobby. He was probably just trying to sell magazine subscriptions to pay for college.....
“Youngster”? If I recall correctly, that’s the euphemism that Al Sharpton and Charlie Rangel use to describe vicious urban felons at the apprentice stage of their careers.
“Breaking down a door and entering a house is a very dangerous thing to do, especially in Texas.”
It would be at my house, considering I have steel gates and bars on my windows. Anyone breaking through those barriers will be deemed hostile and dead before they hit the floor.
I pray that same prayer every day. We don’t want to kill anyone but if we are in danger it could happen.
