Posted on 04/10/2012 9:20:33 AM PDT by BigSkyFreeper
As we often say here: you just can't make it up.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee took his first phone call of his new talk radio call-in show yesterday. From "Mike in San Francisco." Remember: the show is being positioned by the Cumulus Media Network as the conservative show with "more conversation, less confrontation." Or, as it is certainly being pushed in the anti-Rush Limbaugh media, the show for moderate Republicans that will Take Rush Out. RINO Radio, as we noted here last week.
But there seemed to be something slightly out of whack.
The very first phone call, arriving some fifty minutes into the show. To anyone with an ear for talk radio it had a startling quality.
No one seemed to remember to give the call-in number to the audience until the very last few seconds of those first fifty minutes. But yet
presto!... within seconds, Mike Huckabee did in fact have a caller on the line! Without ever questioning how that caller could have gotten on that line in less time than it takes Obama to blame Bush for anything!

Methinks he shall succeed. At being an Al Franken wannabe.
You mean that soft doughy fellow from Arkansas has a show.? He gives me the creeps.
The guy is looking for a paycheck and riding on Limbaugh’s coattails.
The difference is that Limbaugh has demonstrated tremendous courage. Huckabee is an empty suit.
The Huckster proving why he is the Huckster.
What a joke this huckster is. Cannot believe anybody even listens to him. And the dummies on Faux news?
Sherman suspect staged calls to radio talkers not uncommon.
I don’t watch his show on TV, and will not listen to him on radio........Rush, Mark Levin, Boortz and Savage....can’t stand Whinety..............
I confess I just watched a couple of youtube videos from a tv show that I’ve never seen called “cheaters”. I found myself feeling that both the cheaters and the person cheated on were merely the tools of the show and much drama was made from relatively small things.
Same here. I can understand this exec calling in. I can imagine them plan it. It’s sorta irrelevant though. The show will stand or fall on its own merit. I think it will fail.
But the core issue in this story, though technically wrong, is not all that dramatic.
Opie and Anthony caught Howard Stern using the same caller for two different segments, where Howard was plugging something like Howardtv and another product.
Huckabee has a very strong social conservative following. Same group of people who are voting for Santorum in this primary cycle. Don't underestimate how much of an audience there is for someone like Huckabee. It is not enough people to win a GOP nomination for their preferred candidate, but it is certainly enough to attract and retain a fairly significant audience. Will the Huckster be able to compete with Rush? Certainly not. But once they give on that fools errand and focus exclusively on the socon crowd in a different timeslot he may do fairly well.
He will NOT take away Rush's audience because he appeals to a different demographic. Real Rush fans couldn't listen to Huck for more than a few minutes. He'll create his own small audience of ideologically squishy moderate-ish “independents”. They can all high-five each other with their reach across the aisle less-confrontational more-conversational conversation.
Good luck Huck...You're gonna need it.
Huckabee Radio Show = the only conservative radio call-in program with only one incoming phone line.
He’ll be the next “Pumpkin Spice” coffee of talk radio [/obscure Starbucks seasonal coffee reference].
Don’t be surprised if you hear people call in and say, “I just don’t see how I can vote for someone who isn’t a real Christian.”
Bad start to a not-so-good idea.
He appeals to the same demographic who find Bill O’Reilly appealing. Huckabee won’t last long up against Rush.
Few people remember how Limbaugh built his popularity in the first place: he was both very funny and very snarling, in a cutting edge manner. He did not mince words, but spoke from crystal clear conservatism.
Leftists lost their marbles. Eventually, even he decided he had to tone it down a bit, such as when irate feminists (”Feminazis”), called in to scream and shriek at him, he would play the recorded sound of a vacuum cleaner, and say that he had “aborted” their call.
Then, with the Contract With America, anti-Bill Clinton sweep, he felt he had to tone it down even further, as it could have been counterproductive. Unfortunately, this half turned him into a Republican party platform mouthpiece.
Only when the party leadership went full RINO “moderate” did he finally return to more core conservatism. A very good thing.
But Huckabee really doesn’t have much a chance. He is vying for the “weak-conservative moderate Republicans who call themselves conservatives” listeners, and there really aren’t that many of them. Nor are they very dedicated to listening to radio shows.
And this shows another huge advantage to Limbaugh: a LOT of his listeners are working people, at work. That is a huge demographic, and they listen to the same radio station all day long. Or at least for shows they like.
Huckabee is seriously creepy. Nothing more dangerous than a mushy, squishy moderate Republican, well other than any Democrat.
Huckabee is working for the wrong media. He needs to move over to NBC where staging the news is accepted behavior.
What a doofus!!!!
Every caller into his show should announce, "This is not a staged call."
6 months, he will be done.
“Huckabee has a very strong social conservative following. Same group of people who are voting for Santorum in this primary cycle.”
Sadly, this same group of people wants to make America a “Christian Nation” in a way that the Founders NEVER intended! They are all in favor of social programs and governmental interference in THEIR pet peeve project and don’t understand that they are as much of a problem on the right as liberal Democrats are on the left. Examples of this are George Bush’s No Child Left Behind and his creation of the The Office of Faith Based Initiatives, both of which expanded Federal reach into what should be private, community based programs.
Nowhere in the Bible or in the Constitution is the government supposed to be involved in matters of private morality or private charity and we are bankrupting the country by insisting on a nanny state! I am a strong conservative Christian and I cannot stand Mike “Do as I say, Not as I do” Huckabee. This stunt doesn’t surprise me in the least! The Huckster is all about promoting himself and honesty or ethics take a back seat...but those on the Right will excuse him because he’s such a “good man”.
God save us and our country from all these good men who want to control every aspect of our lives because they think they know so much better than we what we need!
The Huckster (Juan McLame butt buddy) is a RINO? Who knew?
Is EVERYONE from Hope, AR A DAMNED Lier!
Odds are so few people are listening at this point that the call volume would be far too low to keep him on the air without the fakes.
Heard a local sports talk guy once who inexplicably was scheduled to do his show on July 4. He got precisely 2 calls in 4 hours...both of them cranks. The rest of the time he was running his mouth like an outboard motor to fill time.
I don’t think the goal here is so much to go after Rush Limbaugh’s audience but rather to recreate what Focus on the Family used to be, with an explicitly political edge that caused problems for the 501(c)3 nonprofit status of Christian radio stations.
Personally I think there’s an audience for both and I think expanding the audience of conservative talk radio is a good thing.
Might be the dog is worried about that hungry looking group tossing him in the ‘squirrel popper’ ( Popcorn popper Huckster claimed to fry squirrels in) for supper.
I've tried listening to something other than Rush if Rush is on a boring topic or something, or not there that day. I tried Dennis Prager, whose writing I really like; but his show is kind of dull. I don't see anybody being as entertaining and to-the-point as El Rushbo. There may be a place for Huck, but it's not Rush's place.
Some to go that route. But for others, it's more about repealing Roe v. Wade, DADT, and keeping marriage what is has been since the dawn of time. Allowing the left to normalize homosexuality via "gay marriage" has led to li'l kids being taught how normal and special it is to be gay. To a great extent, a Christian conservative wants the government out of the morality business.
You are using a RINO as an example. Bush also believes Islam is a "religion of peace"; and I think he said "we all worship the same God" and other new-age nonsense.
The unintended consequence of the left gaining ground on "normalizing immorality" is that we have become a nation of sissies or effeminate males. The cultural norm in Hollywood is to portray masculine men as Neanderthals and idiots.
He’s not from Hope. He’s from Fayetteville.
Early lifeHuckabee was born in Hope, Arkansas, to Mae (née Elder; 19251999) and Dorsey Wiles Huckabee (19231996), conservative Southern Democrats. He has cited his working-class upbringing as the reason for his de-centralized populist conservative political views; his father worked as a fireman and mechanic, and his mother worked as a clerk at a gas company.
His first job, at 14, was working at a radio station where he read the news and weather. He was elected Governor of Arkansas by his chapter of the American Legion-sponsored Boys State program in 1972 and is a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation alumnus. He was student council vice president at Hope High School during the 197172 school year. He was student council president at Hope High School during the 19721973 school year. He has one sister, Mrs. Pat Harris, a middle school teacher.
Huckabee married his wife Janet on May 25, 1974. He graduated magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University, completing his bachelor’s degree in Religion in 2½ years before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He dropped out of the seminary after one year in order to take a job in Christian broadcasting.
My all time fav first time caller to a new talk radio show was when Mario Cuomo started his short-lived career behind the mike. Caller was so excited, enthused, said “I’m just so happy you are on talk radio, this is so exciting,” yada yada. Mario thanked him, appreciating his enthusiasm and support. The caller then said, “yeah, it means you’re no longer governor of New York.” Talk about priceless!
Just being the huckster that he is....
The G. Gordon Liddy show is pretty good, and you can listen online if it is not broadcast in your area. I haven’t heard it for a while now, or Rush either, for that matter, because his time slot isn’t so good in my area.
The Huckster is a known pathological liar.
He tried to get his son off the charges after the young adult tortured, then hung to die, a stray puppy.
Remember the cross that lit up his Christmas ad? Huck lied and mocked people that it wasn’t a cross. What would have been wrong with a beautiful cross in a Christmas ad? But Huck said, “People! it’s a BOOKCASE.”
Huckabee sneaked out and had a gastric bypass. Then not only did he lie and say he did it all with diet and exercise, he wrote a Whole Lying Book about it!!!
The only true thing he ever said was that he loves popcorn popper squirrel meat.
“To a great extent, a Christian conservative wants the government out of the morality business.”
Absolutely correct! And that was the goal of the Founding Fathers - to allow all citizens to practice their own religious beliefs, as long as they did not conflict with established laws. I do understand that the Left waged war on many Christian traditions and I understand the frustration with Roe v Wade and DADT, etc BUT the way to combat those decisions is to REDUCE the power and scope of the Federal Government and argue for 10th Amendment principles.
Sadly, far too many “so-called” conservative Republicans don’t get it and they decide the way to counter the liberal takeover of society via government mandate is to institute a “Christian” government instead....(which is what people like Huckabee and Santorum appear to favor). However, the two don’t go together because it is impossible to respect individual liberties when you are instituting top down control of peoples’ lives. It didn’t work in Plato’s republic or Thomas More’s Utopia and it won’t work now, whether pushed by those on the Left OR on the right!
There's a member of his audience born every minute.
If they start saying “uber-dittos” or some such.......it’s all over.
I have heard all the imitators. For all their numbers, the Right has a very thin bench once you get past the starting pitcher.
What in the world makes you think that consequence is "unintended?"
