Gov. Chris Christie said the country is becoming a "paternalistic entitlement society" this morning in a speech at a conservative conference headed by former President George W. Bush.
Addressing Bush and other national Republicans, Christie said he hasn't seen a less optimistic period in the country in his lifetime.
"Government's telling them stop dreaming, stop striving, we'll take care of you," he said at a theater at the New York Historical Society. "We're turning into a paternalistic entitlement society. That will not just bankrupt us financially, it will bankrupt us morally."
"We'll have a bunch of people sitting on a couch waiting for their next government check," Christie said.

Chris Christie describes himself perfectly.
People can’t get jobs.
When you ENCOURAGE labor unions to run the country, over-regulate industry to the point of strangulation, and over tax the hard-working backbone of the nation to redistribute their earnings to the do-nothings, you force industry to take the jobs elsewhere and you then have no jobs. I encourage Mr. Christie to get off his fat ‘couch’ and come up with a plan that will be an offer American industry cannot refuse. When we get the smoke stacks belching filth into the air again and the hammers banging and the wheels turning with American production this will begin to change. IF, and this is an important if, IF we will tell unions to take a seat and STFU!
I can’t quite figure out why folks are blasting Christie for speaking the needed truth.

I know a lot of people don’t care for Christie (he is certainly more liberal than most of us here), but you really have to admire his guts for speaking the plain truth like this, saying things that Mitt Romney, for example, would never say in a million years.

The advantage to SS disability is that once one is on the program, in order to be removed, the agency has to be able to show improvement in the conditions which impelled the listing. This is a permanent entitlement paycheck.

Please don’t call Gov. Christie a “loud mouth liberal slob”. Yes he is 80% RINO, but now and then some real truths and accurate observations on the sad state of our society come out of his mouth.
As far as the slob part, being a fatty is an unfortunate addiction or an emotional problem that is hard to control and lick. I’ve been there and know the pain of a weight problem. One’s self image and feelings about being fat are hard to handle and make one ashamed. At least fat just harms the one carrying it and rarely harms others, unlike drug and alcohol addiction. We get our fix legally and usually pay for it as well. Not too many fatties leave their kids unsupervised to get a burger or kill others while driving and eating. Most of us also have health insurance and don’t transfer the cost of medical treatment to society or run to the emergency room due to a too spicy taco

We all know there are far too many people collecting gov't benefits...That's not newsworthy...Nor deserving of a pat on the back for acknowledging it...
What does that have to do with the merits of what he said? Look, there are some hard truth that need to be said in this country because there are some pretty tough issues facing us. Whether you like Christie or not, what he said here is something that needed to be said, and I'm glad a prominent Republican had the courage to say it.
I disagree. If all he talked about was too many people on government benefits, he could have blamed "the 1%", "the rich", "evil corporations", or any other liberal boogeyman. Instead, he pointed a finger right at those people and said that a lot of them just didn't have a work ethic, and had an entitlement mentality.
No Democratic/lefty would ever say that. They'd claim it was "blaming the victims", etc. Christie told it like it is. Regardless of his merits on other issues, on this one, he hit a home run.

Christie is way past ‘less than perfect’. See post # 26 for a few of his fatal flaws. Talk is real cheap. Look at his record.
He is not a good role model. I don’t think he could pass a stress test. He may just very well die in a bathtub, before noon, tomorrow.
I have more faith in Dick Cheney (I must admit I have a man-crush on him) serving another 4-8 years as P.O.T.U.S.

Chris Christie likes to talk big, but what has he actually done? Why isn’t he talking about solutions instead of just rallying people to complain about problems we’ve already known for decades. Yawn.
I don’t know why “conservatives” from other parts of the county can’t get it through their thick heads that politicians like Christie and Romney could never get elected on a “pure” Goldwateresqe platform. The MA legislature is 90% Democrat and veto-proof and has been as long as I can remember. The people of MA are very left-wing and the few conservatives are more libertarian leaning than social conservatives.

I watched a couple of hours of the program online. It was heartening to hear talk of lower taxes to spur economic growth. I haven’t heard that in ages. The fact that Bush chose NYC and the New-York Historical Society for this event is quite interesting. It wouldn’t surprise me if resignations were proffered in protest.
Just because he is too liberal doesn't make him not a Republican. He very clearly is. He is also prominent, which is pretty much inherent in being a governor.

I was purchasing an apartment building last year and walked through many of them...
In the middle of the day, all were filled with ablebodied men and women, eating and watching big screen tvs. All on some sort of government subsidy. The realators were all pleased to announce that the buildings that they showed were filled with government subsidized tenants and that the rent was regular and could be counted on showing up. (so far, I thought).
I have had prospective tenants brag about their subsidies as a selling point for tenancy, she also had a rap sheet as long as my arm.
This is the new normal. Horrific!
I realize a lot of people don’t like Christie BUT when he speaks it’s in a way that a lot of people can relate to and comes across as sincere. He could be what the Romney campaign needs. The problem then becomes getting the rest of the country fired up over two Northeast republican-lite politicians.
It’s called pandering.
