Newt Gingrich Issues Statement on Santorum’s Departure, Tells Mike Huckabee He’ll ‘Finally Get to Be 1-on-1 With Romney’

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just on the Mike Huckabee Radio show, and commented on Santorum suspending his own presidential campaign just moments ago. On the show, Gingrich discussed finally getting to be ’1-on-1′ with Romney, how he will campaign going forward, and a possible debate in North Carolina with the current front-runner.

Below are some highlights from Huckabee’s interview with Gingrich:

“I did not get a heads up in advance. We have been talking for two weeks, and I knew this was a real possibility in his mind. I do know that he had begun to realize that when you are up against all of Wall Street, it is very difficult. The money machine makes it difficult to have a competitive race.”

“I am not focused on going after Romney; I want to focus on the issues and Barack Obama. I will admit it was a slugging match in Florida; people who like me don’t want me down in the gutter. We will see what Governor Romney decides. I am going to focus on the Republican platform and why Obama is a grave threat to this country.”

“Our folks are making calls to undecideds and those for Rick [Santorum]; we have been talking to someone in North Carolina, and there may be a debate [...] between Romney and me. I would like to have an open dialogue – just the two of us, a chat.”

Here is the full statement released by Gingrich’s press secretary:

This would be a great time for Newt to announce Allen West as his running mate. I would pay to see those two debate obammy and biden.

Laz, Santorum is no longer running. The aim of conservative Republicans now should be to deny Romney the Republican candidacy.

If you need to take some time out and grieve, do so. But we all have to pull together as the race winnows down to basics: it is either a progressive Romney or a conservative Gingrich.

Newt is still delusional as usual. People had a chance to vote for him and chose not to. Newt is as flip floppy and untrustworthy as Mitt.

It wouldn't be a Newt thread without your canned anti-Gingrich comments.

This is exactly what I told my husband. Being a tin foil hat wearer, I thought he might have done this on purpose (ran and kept running then telling Newt he needed to step down)since he endorsed Romney in 2008.

I was going to vote for Santorum in Indiana, now, I will vote for Newt.

Newt will benefit from the anti-Romney vote. He can still prevent Romney in getting the nomination. The Santorum-Newt vote is the anti-Romnet vote.

I hope Gingrich's supporters are equally gracious.

You will find, I think, that a plurality of hard-core Newt supporters on FR are actually Romney people. Watch them turn into "we need to support the nominee" posters now.

>>>And Romney is a Coward if he doesn’t<<<

I would be ecstatic to watch Newt debate Mitt. Then more so watching an Obama Newt debate.

This is NOT a good time to antagonize Santorum supporters and NOT good time to cast aspersions.

We need every Santorum supporter to be a GOP supporter at crunch time.

And, folks, it's crunch time.

Sun, Santorum is no longer in the race. Take some time from FR to grieve but looking for a scapegoat to explain his departure is wrong. It was his decision to make and no one else.

BTW he's on Hannity now.

The time to pull together was when there was a candidate with a snowballs chance in hell of beating Willard, I'm afraid.

I'll support Newt but the last thing I want to hear are those who have been chrashing every SAntorum thread throwing around childish insults now talking about 'pulling together'. (not directed at you)

Thank you, Satindoll.

Words said today are going to be remembered. We all need to choose them carefully.

I've been saying for several weeks that the only hope I can see of stopping Romney is for all the conservative candidates — Gingrich, Santorum, Perry, Cain, and possibly Bachmann — to stand up together and say, “No Romney, no way.”

Gingrich finally has his one-on-one race against Romney. Unfortunately he's out of money, several million dollars in debt, and has just a few weeks to figure out how to win (or at least perform reasonably well) in Pennsylvania.

Maybe Gingrich can win this thing. I don't see how, but then again, two decades ago I thought there was no chance of Gingrich succeeding at taking back the House of Representatives for the Republican Party and becoming Speaker. He's surprised me once and he may surprise me again.

I suspect tonight's meeting of my county's Republican club, most of whom are Santorum supporters with a few Romney backers, will be rather difficult. I know of only one significant Newt Gingrich supporter in our county, a well-respected city council member. I guess maybe I need to figure out how to convince everybody else to vote for him at our district and state convention as a Gingrich delegate.

To everybody else who is a Santorum or Gingrich supporter — listen to what I just said about what I need to do in my local area. This is going to be extremely hard work, and it's going to come down to persuading individual delegates in many cases. Find out who your delegates are, and if they've not been selected yet, get someone to put their names forward who you believe will vote against Romney. Be especially careful to find out who the Santorum delegates are; if Santorum releases them, they can vote for anyone, and it's not at all clear Gingrich will be their first choice.

This battle isn't over yet, but it's very close to the end.

That kind of talk is disruptive -- as you expected when you decided to post it. Very suspect -- sort of the "accuse others of what you're guilty of" kind of post.

Baloney. You Newt guys want to run around trashing the hell out of our guy, posting hateful garbage like what I responded too and then expect us to just jump on board yours guys sunk campaign is CRAZY. You guys are reaping what you sewed here at FR over the past year with your incessant slamming of the only guy that had the ground game together to beat Milt and was actually doing it.

What did you think all of this name calling and slamming was going to get you anyway?

Eh, not this one. Believe me, I’ve tried to convince myself that I could pull the lever for the man ...but I just always crap out.

I could no more vote for Romeny than the man on the moon. I vote for CONSERVATIVES. Newt is a conservative. Had Newt bowed out, I could have voted for Santorum, but just barely.

Romulon is from some other planet out there in the universe, sorry.

I don’t care if Newt can win the nomination now or not. I just want to make it as hard, painful and expensive for Romney to win as possible. The GOP elites need to pay as big a price as possible for shoving the Masshole down our throats. They need to know that it won’t be easy if they try to push another candidate like him on us in the future.

Thanks to Santorum for wasting 2 months of our time, blowing countless millions in potential donations, and helping hand Romney the nomination by roadblocking conservatives from coalescing around Gingrich.
