Army lab to develop 'green' technologies for military [Another Way BO is weakening America]

new Army laboratory will develop technology such as fuel cells and hybrid systems for combat vehicles as the Pentagon steps up its push for cleaner and more reliable energy, federal officials said today.

The complex near Detroit was opening as the Obama administration prepared to announce a series of initiatives to create a greener U.S. military, which officials said is intended not to just to benefit the environment but also to improve fighting capabilities.

Good God Almighty, FRiends.

Does THIS not wake some of us up? Obama isn't interested in having an army that can completely kick the enemy's ass. He wants an army that celebrates homosexuality, that asks for permission before shooting, and that runs on solar and wind energy.

Please, for the sake of letting the military do its job--kill people and break things--work to fire him in November.

The military uses 90 percent of the energy consumed by the federal government, which accounts for about 2 percent of all U.S. energy consumption. Reducing reliance on fossil fuels will make the military more efficient and save lives, officials said, noting that many casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan involve convoys hauling fuel to battle areas.

Some of the technology developed in the labs might spur innovations for passenger and commercial vehicles, officials said. Industry and university experts will team up with military researchers on some projects.

This will not weaken the military. Read the article. We will still be the worlds military power for decades to come. Also there will be a filter down of technology to the private sector much like what happened under NASA. Free calculators given away when you sign up for a checking account anyone?

So we can invade your country and destroy strategic targets and infrastructure, without harming the environment.

Only from this administration.... “manure maunitions”. Biodegradable munitions which leave the battlefield greener than before.

What a load of himno!

That’s the way I read it. I’m fine with the military exploring it’s alternative fuel options, as long as military capability is not compromised.

Hey, what could go wrong? Oh yeah, we already tried it and it cost us a Space Shuttle and crew.

?

Among the initiatives is a competition to spur discoveries and a goal of generating enough renewable energy on military bases by 2025 to equal the output of three nuclear plants, according to administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment ahead of the announcement. The Pentagon previously has said it intends to meet one-quarter of its energy needs from renewable sources by then.

Yeah, OR...it could just go ahead and build 3 nuclear plants and be CERTAIN to have the energy needed. Instead, this is more money to be used to fund Obama's liberal buddies like Solyndra. Did you catch this gem from the article:

Acknowledging the need to control federal spending, officials said meeting the goal would require billions in private sector financing.

And then in the next line:

Officials said the Energy Department would fund a $30 million research competition...

Waste o' money, my friend.

Believe me, if there is an action that'll make our military stronger, OBAMA will not participate.

The military and the Pentagon is asking for this. All this is a push for more hi-technology.

They are smart and doing this right. If they just asked for the money for the new technology the American public would scream but hey it's for a new "green military" the American public is all for it.

Go back and read the article. The military and the Pentagon is asking for this. As I said in the prior post all this is is a push for the latest electronic technology under the guise of green technology so the libs and enviro folks are on board.

If you really think we will be going backward with technology and weakened capabilities you are sadly mistaken.

I guess you’re right. Our military bases really need wind and solar. < /sarcasm>

Energy independence in light of unstable power grids and shrinking generation capacity is a good thing.

Producing more energy on military bases will serve their national security mission by making them less dependent on the commercial power grid, officials said. They planned to announce a goal of generating 3 gigawatts of electricity — enough to power 750,000 homes — from renewable sources such as solar and wind on Army, Navy and Air Force bases.

I agree. And the unstable power grids and shrinking capacity are because....of the EPA.

Solar and wind are not going to make our military stronger. That is absurd.

This is not all about solar and wind. And what is wrong with solar? My dad has used 2 miles of solar electric fence for the cows now for 10 years and it is better than power from the barn. It never goes out. It charges even on very cloudy days and the battery backup never goes out.

Great for your dad. He isn’t running a military base, is he?

As far as the hybrid nonsense, I’ve already addressed my concerns with this via Solyndra, etc.

And I know Obama—if it will make the military stronger, he will resist the idea.

Let’s not forget, the Space Shuttle was working just fine until somebody had a cow about the chemicals that went into the foam used as a heat shield (not the tiles).

They changed the formula, and it started flaking off. It only cost us a shuttle and a crew.

The environment? Not sure how all those burned bodies effected the breathing quality of the folks who ultimately ingested that and the rest of the bits of shuttle that eventually wafted to earth.

This is the wave of the future whether you like it or not. It's going through some growing pains but I have 100% faith in our military they will do the right thing and make sure everything is up to par and we don't lose any capabilities.

I think you would have been b****en when we got rid of the horses in the military. LOL

:-) Okay, Mr. Solarnwind.

Here's the deal and history of the matter: the military adopted internal combustion vehicles, abandoning horses, after the ic technology had been PROVEN to be useful--as evidenced by the private sector success of Henry Ford, et al.

NOTHING like Ford's success has been shown in the private sector thus far.

But you keep dreamin' that Obama really wants a stronger military.
