Mayor Michael Bloomberg went down to Washington D.C. earlier today to advocate for limits to “Stand Your Ground” laws, made famous the recent shooting of Trayvon Martin, which allow looser standards for the use of deadly force. Flanked by representatives of groups like the NAACP and National Urban League, he announced a new initiative to push states, particularly Florida, to reform their self-defense laws.
“These laws are not the kind of laws that a civilized society should have,” Mr. Bloomberg said at the event. “This has nothing to do with gun owners’ rights, nothing to do with the Second Amendment. Plain and simple, this is just trying to give people a license to murder.”
“No civilized society that I know of, outside of America, has laws that permit anybody to just decide someone shouldn’t be alive, pull out a gun, shoot them, and get away with it,” he later added.

Perhaps then Mr. Bloomberg should start today to increase the prison room by at least 200% nationwide. Then the courts need to start using that room and fill it with the predators. And prison should not be a vacation - forced labor with long marches, ala the bataan death marches. Treat them like we treat predatory animals. Make it so people don’t want to go back to prison.
Then after the government can assure the “civil” society that the predators have been removed can we start talking about removing “stand your ground” laws - but by then we won’t need them.
I just don’t see this happening. The courts have so little regard for society that they spring repeat offenders on low bail, then wonder why they go do crimes again.
Being on equal footing with the predators by carrying a gun is a hell of a lot cheaper to me than the thousands of dollars per year that my taxes would have to go up to keep them in prison.
Or maybe would could just fence off an entire state size area and just dump them in there - eventually there would be far fewer because they would kill each other - predators never change their ways after all.
I would bet a very large sum Zimmerman wished he’d left his gun at home.
It is certainly possible he could have been beaten to death if he hadn’t been armed, but it is at least as possible that the intensity of the attack owed something to the presence of the gun.
No matter who started the fight, once both were aware the gun was there it became literally a life and death struggle over who controlled it.
Zim himself says (or so it has been reported) that he “had to shoot” to keep Martin from getting the gun. Martin, if he’d survived would no doubt be telling us he had to fight to protect himself against an armed attacker.
Any law that more or less vindicates whoever happens to survive is problematic. And I don’t mean SYG, which just doesn’t apply, for either side.

I am sure that Mayor Bloomberg’s bodyguards will respect his wishes for them to retreat when faced with a threat to his life.
