Poll: 42% of GOP voters favor Romney

PRINCETON, N.J., April 11 (UPI) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is the preferred presidential candidates of 42 percent of Republicans nationwide, Gallup said Wednesday.

Rick Santorum, who announced Tuesday he was suspending his campaign, was the choice of 24 percent of Republicans in the poll completed before he made his announcement, the Princeton, N.J., pollster said.

Romney has held the edge over Santorum since late February and has been the leader for all but two brief periods this year.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tied with U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 10 percent.

Even though Romney has been among the leaders throughout the GOP nomination process, Republicans' lack of enthusiasm for him has shown several times when he either shared or lost the lead, Gallup said.

Gallup said it was shifting its tracking to measure general election preferences between President Obama and Romney, with the first results to be reported Monday.

Romney's 42 percent in Gallup's final 2012 nomination preference poll is among the lowest Gallup has measured for a party nominee in its final poll since 1972, the pollster said.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews conducted April 4-9 with 1,149 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who are registered to vote. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

The enthusiasm is overwhelming, huh? That Massachusetts liberal cannot even excite half of Republicans. The establishment has really screwed up big time. They deserve to choke on their slimy liberal Obamacare architect. The United States people do not deserve to have to choose between a Marxist, a liberal, or none-of-the-above.

What's left. Romney or Newt. Looks like fools are at it again. We have no choice but to go for Romney or Newt because looking at King Obama you have to realize that he will be America's dictator for life. Think about it. Whoops, can Americans think?

Only 42% want Milt? Maybe 58% of respondents didn’t understand that the GOPe has selected Milt for our own good? We need to get our mind right. The GOPe is just looking out for us after all.

The 42% who favor romney are either liberal or don’t have all the history of romney. Obama will ensure they know he is as liberal as he is; thus depressing the republlican vote.

The GOP serves up a Massachusetts liberal for nominee. Yeah, that’s the ticket for grassroots enthusiasm! In my neck of the woods, my stalwart Republican friends/relatives who are usually champing at the bit to talk about politics, have zero excitement towards the election, and whenever I bring up the topic, just roll their eyes, and want to switch subjects. A total reversal from 2010.

It seems so unlikely that a Republican presidential candidate left of McCain can be helped with a Palin-esque VP pick. Romney is the final nail in the coffin.

It’s psychology - people naturally want to back a winner, and since the MSM, Drudge, etc. have managed to create the meme that Romney is “inevitable,” the weaker-minded are naturally starting to gravitate toward him.

Newt needs to (politely) smash Romney, starting yesterday, if he hopes to have a chance. Remind people WHY they have this distaste in their mouths after saying Romney’s name.

So why aren’t there attempts to get RINO Romney disqualified since he’s not a natural born citizen ?

This would get rid on Romney, and push Gingrich to the top.

Also it would shine a light on the natural born citizen requirement for ALL presidential candidates......

Mitt was born in Detroit (which, believe it or not at last check, was still part of the United States).

His father was born in Mexico. Curiously that did not prevent him from moving pretty far down the nomination path in 1968.

Mitt’s father was born in Mexico. It hasn’t been shown that he was a US citizen at the time of Mitt’s birth.

He may therefore not be natural born !

So the conservative alternate to McCain in 08 is no to the left of McCain in 12? Have we always been at war with Eurasia?
