The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations that President Obama announced last summer will make it impossible for 7 million lower income consumers to buy a new car according to a National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) study released today.
“While you can mandate what automakers must build, you can’t dictate what customers will buy, nor can you dictate if a bank will make a loan,” New Mexico Ford dealer Don Chalmers said today.

I don’t think free cars will be the plan... Car provide freedom and mobility. I think this is intended to force more people onto public transportation. Public transportation modes like buses and high speed trains seem to be the transportation Utopia for the left.
That was the idea. Fewer cars, with the excuse of saving the planet, yields reduced freedom.

Good catch on this article. It explains a lot of what I’ve been seeing lately; people are obviously hanging on to their older cars longer and I’m seeing a lot more motorcyclists in the morning/evening commute. There’s been reported a huge shortage of “used” vehicles for sale.
The Dems are quite intent on reducing invdividual mobility and long range mobility. It fits nicely into their Agenda 21 UN plans to trap everyone in the crap cities where people are discouraged from having children and old people are routinely beaten to death for sport as in England. Their vision is the Clockwork Orange type world.

Personally, I thought he shoulda just mandated 100mpg. It would make for a better talking point and is just as realistic. This green clown and his flying monkeys are pure RED.
Well, we could make smaller engined, affordable and gas efficient cars like they do in other countries. We traveled around Europe last year and saw many vehicles that never make it to the USA. We rented a small 4cly (5 passenger) and even doing 160kmph on the autobahn, we didn’t need as much gas as we would need here. I was fascinated by the many different makes that were available there.

But, but, but, without affordable transportation I wouldn’t be able to carry many of my guns on public transport! We would not be able to mobilize and transport ourselves to the battlefront of some national emergency! Surely, our benevolent government does not intend those consequences. Do they?

On the demand end of the auto market, it would be unwise for a lower-income person to purchase a new car in the first place. They’re overpriced, almost always require payment plans, cost more for insurance, are more susceptible to theft, and their value declines daily.
When I was on vacation in Virginia last week, I saw an excellent attack ad. Can’t remember who it was from, not a candidate ad, but an anti-Baraq ad.
Video of Steve Chu talking about the desirability of “European levels of gasoline pricing” and then sheepishly mentioning in a congressional hearing “I don’t own an automobile at this time”.
Really a devastating ad, and I’m sure will be shown a lot.
When your only goal is to overwhelm the system, it’s all good as long as it is bad.
Husband and I have been shopping for a new GAS EFFICIENT car that meets or exceeds the good gas mileage we get with our Saturns (one gets almost 40 and the other around 35...they got even better before ethanol was added).
We do not want a small car because my husband has issues with getting in and out of the vehicle due to hip problems. It’s quite hard to find anything for a decent price. We do NOT want a hybrid because of the cost of electricity.
At this point we are considering the Hyundai Elantra.
