2004: Romney signs off on permanent assault weapons ban

Andrew Kaczynski dug up this Romney press release today from the Web Archive, showing that he signed off on a permanent Assault Weapons ban in 2004:

In a move that will help keep the streets and neighborhoods of Massachusetts safe, Governor Mitt Romney today signed into law a permanent assault weapons ban that forever makes it harder for criminals to get their hands on these dangerous guns.

“Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts,” Romney said, at a bill signing ceremony with legislators, sportsmen’s groups and gun safety advocates. “These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”

Like the federal assault weapons ban, the state ban, put in place in 1998, was scheduled to expire in September. The new law ensures these deadly weapons, including AK-47s, UZIs and Mac-10 rifles, are permanently prohibited in Massachusetts no matter what happens on the federal level.

“We are pleased to mark an important victory in the fight against crime,” said Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey. “The most important job of state government is ensuring public safety. Governor Romney and I are determined to do whatever it takes to stop the flood of dangerous weapons into our cities and towns and to make Massachusetts safer for law-abiding citizens.”

The Constitution of the State of Michigan Article 1, Section 6 reads:

Every person has a right to keep and bear arms for the defense of himself and the state.

“Being an elected official does not mean that you impose your will upon the electorate. It means you represent the electorate and protect the vulnerable. It was MA’s will he was enacting to a very large degree. He was solving their problems not the Nation’s.”

Okay, but there are plenty of politicians who manage to do so without positively asserting that they agree with it, or even managing to look as if they’re not sick to their stomachs. Nor do they have to parrot the supposed opposition’s talking points, i.e. lies. Romney didn’t just go along with the will of Mass. voters (if it was, in fact, their will). He acted like it was his idea.

Well, that’s pretty clear, too! Words have meanings, like my tagline. (KJV)

OK. Good point. I was just responding as I always do to a liberal who says that an “assault rifle” is only good for killing people. I agree with them. I didn’t notice the “hunting down” part of the quote. My point is that we shouldn’t shy away from the anti-human purpose of an “assault rifle”. That’s what it was built for and that’s what the 2nd Amendment was written for.

An “assault rifle” is a shoulder-fired, select-fire weapon used by an individual soldier, firing a cartridge of intermediate rifle caliber, with a detachable high-capacity magazine.

A potato peeler, banana or spork could be an “assault weapon.”

Don’t know about you, Mitt, but I’d much rather have the same or better firepower than the dirtbag scum who decides to accost me, my family, or my property. And, please define “assault weapon” for the great unwashed masses, you nitwit RINO.

Say what you want about Romney. He was a Governor of a Liberal State. Being an elected official does not mean that you impose your will upon the electorate.

I would argue that a "Liberal electorate" would only elect one who is consistent with their will....as SoConPubbie has shown in his post #20.

It’s time to pick, Obama or Romney.

We may want and wish but those are the two hard choices.

“You should have voted for Newt.”

obviously, SCP is trying very hard to provide ammunition for the Obama reelection campaign. God save America if BO is reelected.

What does that make your statement if those two are on the ballot?

My statement will remain accurate.

1) It is not yet time to choose.

2) Those two vermin are not the only choices.

3) Rejecting each of those death culture candidates is the easiest thing in the world.

As I said, your two sentence post contained three lies.

That is a picture of a L1A1/FN FAL. That is not an Assault weapon, that is a battle rifle.
