CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama insisted Thursday that without government spending, “Google, Facebook would not exist.”

Obama made the remark at a campaign fundraiser while criticizing the budget passed by House Republicans. Obama said the Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget would, among other things, cut funding for research.

“I believe in investing in basic research and science because I understand that all these extraordinary companies that are these enormous wealth-generators -- many of them would have never been there; Google, Facebook would not exist, had it not been for investments that we made as a country in basic science and research,” Obama said. “I understand that makes us all better off.”

Obama said Ryan’s budget would gut “an advanced, responsible society.”

Following that logic, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Interstate Highway system are responsible for the success of Walt Disney World. DARPA may have made the initial research into the Internet, but the later developments were conducted by private industry.

There is ahuge difference between government spending and government subsidies. Government spending may have created the predecessor to the internet. Private companies took the concept (with private financing) way beyond anything the government imagined.

If the government subsidized the internet, we will all be still talking at 300baud over an AOL connected phone line.

... direct result of Netscape’s successful IPO and the “dot com” boom (who laid the groundwork for that one?).

To say nothing of the best (at the time) Web Search Engine AltaVista, predating Google by three years.

AMEN!!!

mmmmmmmm AltaVista! Back then, it was a complete meta-scrape of the internet. Faster, Higher, Louder!

And that cool mountain skyline.

I miss it. The current “yahoo-vista” is weak tea by comparison.

“I believe facebook, google, yahoo, all of them ARE owned by the government.”

They are certainly closely aligned with this administration. I guess being a tool of the Obama Administration is the same as “being owned”.

Obama is an idiot. He wants taxes but then disrespect those who pay them as they generate revenues that fund for the asset in need of protection... and he destroys them.

Guess what, no Google, nothing, no taxes, no government, period. Banana republic, here we come.

If the government announced they had spent taxpayer dollars creating a “social networking site” they could use to spy on it’s citizens many people, especially conservatives, would have pitched a bitch. But when it’s presented that some college kid “created” it in his dorm room and it’s for social networking only and he became a billionair, we not only all sign up, we sing the praises of capitalism and of Zuckerburg’s genious.

But, now we’re being spied on and we’re giving them the permission to do it. Go on FB and post some stuff the Government will view as a threat and see how long it is before you’re contacted by government agents. Watch PERSON OF INTEREST and visualize thousands of workers instead of just two.

Gotta’ go. Headin’ to the store....Runnin’ low on tin foil.

Al Gore invented the Internet. Logically then, none of these things would exist without government.

Al Gore + Internet = assbook

That’s my algorerithm

Obama: ‘Google, Facebook Would Not Exist’ Without Government Funding
'Technically' Barry is correct. Without the "Internet" those websites would not exist. And the Internet is like the 'great-great-great grandson' of 'ARPAnet' or aka: 'DARPAnet' (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency: www.darpa.mil/). But he's reeeeeally stretching it. More so than Al Gore claiming he invented the Internet by his voting for funding of the ARPAnet.

In fact it's more like saying that Charles Lindberg couldn't have soloed across the Atlantic, or United Airlines, Northwest, etc., would not exist without government funding because the FedGov bought some of the Wright brothers first airplanes. And then advanced aviation again during WWII with FedGov money.

FYI: DARPA is one of our most secret of secret agencies. Or used to be before the Internet became what it is now and everything is somewhere out in cyberspace waiting to be found. So now DARPA is out in the open like the other Agencies.

Interestedly (to me) DARPA also has their own little 'Security Agency' where Lethal Force is authorized for any breach. Their 'public' budget is zero as everything is funded under Black Ops. They likely run Area 51 and the other secret bases in the deserts around Area 51.

DARPA is not where you go for funding if you have an idea for a new battle/assault rifle. It's where you go if that idea is for an 'invisible rifle'. In short -- the really weird stuff.

Facebook used to be decent when you had to have a college email address to login. Now it’s just a bunch of people you don’t know sending you farmville requests...
