Strike threat at Hostess could kill off Twinkies

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread heads to court Tuesday to try to throw out its union contracts, in a battle that leaves the iconic baker's future very much in doubt.

Hostess Brands, which makes Ding Dongs and a variety of other sweet treats, is asking the bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y. to tear up labor agreements, which would, among other things, allow Hostess to change how it funds union pensions. The hearing is expected to last two days.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, together represent more than three-quarters of the 18,500 workers at the company.

The Teamsters have vowed to strike if the judge agrees with management's request and dumps the labor deals.

But both management and the unions agree that the company is unlikely to survive a strike.

“Those Maoist unions would rather see Hostess go down rather than give up a single dime.”

Literally true. I watched Eastern Airlines go out of business because the labor unions would not compromise. I hope lots of union workers lost their homes after they lost their jobs, because the whole damned lot deserved it.

Messin’ with my Twinkies really makes me mad. I likes my Twinkies with strawberries and whipped cream.

Unions suck and I hope they pay for this.

Hey, union, let’s take a struggling company and kill it off. Brilliant.

Stock Up Now!

They say with all the preservatives...twinkies will stay fresh for a thousand years.

Glad I’m not the only one whose first thought was, “Who’s gonna tell Tallahassee?”

Glad to be of service.

If I don’t make jokes about all this crapp, I’m soon to be on the 6 o’clock news.

The union killed off Stella D’Oro, my favorite bakery. It was in the Bronx, just across the river from Manhattan, next to the el tracks of the #1, and the smell was heavenly.

Most of the workers didn’t even want to be in the union, but I guess that doesn’t matter.

I watched the unionized work force of the second-oldest grocery chain in Michigan vote themselves out of a job, rather than take a modest pay cut in exchange for employee ownership!

Not sure if any of those folks ever worked again for more than minimum wage. They had the logical process an amoeba. "No way! You're not takin' anything away from US!"

Not to worry.

Some enterprising company will import Chinese-made, PCB-flavored “Trinkies”, and consumers everywhere will be happy again.

Anything I buy now days is checked for a Union Label. If its Union, it isn’t purchased by me if I can help it. Screw the Democrat Unions.

I know the chain you are talking about. I was dating a checker that was making about 30 cents more per hour than I was and I was at top police officer pay, which wasn’t too bad.
After this vote, they lost it all. Same job became just one pay grade up from minimum wage. By the way, this was before bar code scanners so the check out person had to be fast and accurate.

Union leaders don’t lose jobs, they don’t care. They just move somewhere else for the union.
