New Mexico firm applies for first horse meat slaughterhouse

A New Mexico slaughterhouse has petitioned the federal government to become the first business to offer horse meat for human consumption since an effective ban on the practice ended last year, according to state officials and animal welfare groups.

Those groups said last week they are rallying to try to block the slaughterhouse’s petition, hoping to head off what they fear could be a series of slaughterhouses applying to produce horse meat

I know a young man, he just became an American citizen, he has spent the years since they closed all the slaughterhouses getting “Muy Rico”. He is a horse man and he bought them through the auctions for next to nothing and he had them given to him by people who couldn’t afford to feed them anymore. He trained the good young ones and sold them and sent the old nags to the slaughterhouse right across the border.

I am fairly sure he won’t stop what he’s doing whether there is a slaughterhouse in NM or not.

I read that also. It would be good for the economy. Let’s face it, horses need a place to go besides being starved to death. It is life, and some enjoy the meat.

The politically correct thing to do here would be for a fancy wancy foodie woodie like Jeremiah Tower or Alice Waters or Mario Batagli, etc., to open a little boutique-y organic horse meat “charcuterie,” which is ok, as opposed to a slaughterhouse, which is not.

Get a few up and running and the opposition will have a hard time just targeting one.

I don’t advocate cruelty to the horses or anything but it is no sin to eat it and I don’t like us making certain animals “off limits” because we project our humanity upon them.

Lewis and Clark ate plenty of horses, but that was 200+ years ago.

The horse is a noble animal - I would not eat it. One doesn’t eat a bald eagle or a dog or cat, so why a horse?

Trainer friend two roads down had a horse and three donkeys turned loose on their road. They managed to pen the horse up but couldn’t catch the donkeys. Now they are stuck with the horse. I plan to shoot and bury anything that comes this way. I’d hate to think of a family being killed up on the paved road. You have to jump through so many legal hoops to get rid of any stray you capture. You get stuck with feeding the animal for months before you can run him through a sale.

Some writer that I read—I think it was Solzhenitsyn—once described a meat pie made from horse and rabbit meat in equal proportions—one horse to one rabbit.

Saw a cowboy movie once that I can’t recall the title where one dude asked another what the name of his horse was. The cowboy replied “You don’t name something you might have to eat”.

Nothing wrong with eating anything edible except people, the only real moral concerns are the reasons, the scarcity and the sources. The BLM is supposed to control the population of feral mustang herds on public lands, there will be more surplus animals then what can be found homes for. The key word in the BLM is management, even if they often are really bad at it.

“The horse is a noble animal - I would not eat it. One doesn’t eat a bald eagle or a dog or cat, so why a horse?”

Well, first of all, God calls them clean. In Acts he tells Peter to rise, kill and eat all manner of animals, and says, what God calls clean do not call unclean.

So I know it’s not wrong.

If I were hungry enough I’d eat any of the animals you listed.

Bald eagles: not worth a prison sentence. I can appreciate forbidding killing endangered species. Cats: I’ve heard, like most predators, that the meat is not great. Dogs: We in America behave as if they are people. They aren’t, but, it’s illegal to eat dog meat here. Horsemeat was legal for centuries and is still consumed in most of the world. We had some technical problem with it for a few years as horse lovers tried to effectively make it impossible to obtain.

I don’t mind anyone’s preferences, including vegetarianism, but I do mind them taking the authority upon themselves to declare what animal is noble or not. They are animals.

I don’t think they should be tortured, but I think it’s fine to eat them if you wish. Assuming they belong to you. Also, as I said, I can see a reasonable restriction on endangered species, assuming they are really endangered.

I remember many years ago when Jack in the Box was importing horsemeat from Australia for its burgers.

My grandfather and great uncle raised minks back when mink coats were popular. Each animal was kept in its own cage and there were thousands of cages.
Feed came from old horses that were slaughtered on site.

Well...the Volt will add explosive combustion to it's speed when the batteries explode.

The Prius will go faster with the doors open and a tail wind, going downhill, while being pushed by a semi.

Maybe.

Our Government spends MILLIONS of $$$ warehousing wild horses...

I live near ranches that are being paid to have these mustangs live out their lives. They are very hard on the ground...and will eat the paint off your truck. ( That's happened to me....)

Instead of raising cattle...these ranchers are being paid to just warehouse mustangs. It's a total waste of $$...and a potential food source.

Thanks to Hollywood, most people think cowboys carried pistols in order to shoot banditos, outlaws, Indians, snakes, bears or cougars.

They actually carried them in order to kill their horse before their horse killed them.
