The campaign of Richard Mourdock, the Indiana treasurer who hopes to knock off Sen. Dick Lugar, said a new poll indicates he's leading the race.
Mourdock's campaign cited a poll conducted by McLaughlin and Associates this week that shows him leading Lugar by the slimmest of margins, 42 to 41 percent. The poll had a 5 percent margin of error.
"Republican primary voters believe Sen. Lugar is out of touch with their concerns and ready to elect a true conservative to the U.S. Senate," Mourdock said in a news release.
Mourdock and Lugar have been engaged in an increasingly heated campaign. A poll before last week's debate showed Mourdock 7 percentage points behind Lugar. The Indiana primary is May 8

This is excellent news. I just hope that some high profilie conservatives sign on.
A Republican Senator gets challenged by a more Conservative upstart, all they gentility and comity they employ when dealing with their Democrat “colleagues” goes right out the window.
They’ll fight a Conservative challenger like they’re fighting a vanguard of demons from Hell.
Good stuff!
The news in this primary keeps getting better.
In my early years I proudly voted for Dick Lugar but soon realized he was just another cog in the Washington machine and liked the bumper sticker that said “Dick Lugar before he dicks you”
I hope IN votes him out.....
NICE! Thanks.
I hope you’re passing around the Mourdock yard signs. I’ve managed to give a few away.
My area is saturated with them. I’ve seen only one Lugar sign.
Buh Bye, Dick.
Excellent analogy
Traitorous old POS Lugar should’ve gone out the door a decade ago. Glad to see he’s actually having to campaign for the first time.
FYRL!
FYI, Mark Levin did a bit on his radio show tonight lambasting John McCain, Mitch Daniels, and other GOP establishment types for circling the wagons for Lugar in this race, as well as Lugar himself. This is one of several good chances for conservative Republicans to oust incumbent RINOs or ‘Rats from their Senate seats this year.
Said Lugar is bringing in the Republican machine to help him. The Governor and McCain will be endorsing him, thought he also said commercial ad blitz.
FWIW: Lake Co and St. Joe Co dembots pulling R ballots in some areas since they think mistakenly Sout’bend Joe Donelly will benefit
“This is excellent news. ..”
It sure is! Tonight Mark Levin called Mourdock a Reagan conservative.
Dick Lugar is just another Hatch, Collins, Snow, et al....has been, do nothing, go along to get along......cancer on our country.
Is it his seniority? Is it his voting record? Is it his standing with the Conservatives? Is it ....... his surname?
You do know this guy pretty well reflects the ambitions of his constituency ~ Indiana voters ~ who have been incredibly evenly split 50/50 ever since the days of D.C.Stephenson and Governor Schricker (who ran on both parties).
I watched the debate and Mourdock sounds pretty much like Lugar on all the issues ~ so why, in the face of a probable Republican takeover of the US Senate, would it necessarily be wise for Indiana voters to give up Lugar's seniority (and power) in exchange for a fellow who takes the same positions on every issue, and who will not have that same seniority?
