Remember the cops who beat Rodney King. They were acquitted in the criminal case where the blacks decided to riot but then the Feds stepped in and charged civil right violations against the cops and they were found guilty in Federal Court and were sentenced to prison for almost 3 years.

The key there is that they were cops, and could be charged with violation of civil rights under color of authority. I don't know how you would charge a private individual with violating someone's civil rights...

It can be done; e.g., Limerick Nelson being acquitted of murdering Yankel Rosenbaum, but convicted on federal civil rights charges.
