Parents kept in the dark about student sex offenders (Washington State)

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- A controversial state law that prevents school districts from warning parents about student sex offenders is drawing criticism with news that a 19-year-old sex offender allegedly raped a fellow student near Vancouver.

After news broke about the Vancouver incident, more parents came forward to say they had discovered sex offenders in their children's schools.

Kathleen Britt said she was sad and horrified when she learned about the recent attack on a Clark County campus. The shocking news reminded the Puyallup mom of her own horror upon learning that her daughter was also going to school with a registered sex offender.

"I was initially just stunned because I didn't even know that that was a possibility that registered sex offenders could be in the school and we would not know about it," she said.

The law prevents the Puyallup School District from notifying parents or students about sex offenders, and Britt said the district wouldn't even tell her how they planned to keep students safe.

"Because as parents we entrust our kids to the care of these people all day long, and if we don't know we can't partner with them to protect them," Britt said.

State Rep. Kirk Pearson thinks parents should know if there are registered sex offenders in their kids' classes, and he's tried to pass such a law for a decade.

"When you're dealing with sex offenders, you know that knowledge is power," Pearson said.

The state's Office of Superintendent of Public Instructions does not keep track of juvenile sex offenders in schools, but six years ago an OSPI working group did find that statewide, there were 478 sex offenders under the age of 21. And 165 of those were level 2 or 3 -- the most serious risk to reoffend.

Pearson believes that until parents are armed with specific knowledge about sex offenders, attacks like the one in Clark County will continue.

"I'm a parent and I think the parents in this state should be angry that they do not have that knowledge," he said.

Sex with (or presumably between) minors isn’t rape-rape...

Indeed.  Sadly, I haven't been Blessed with children, but if I were I would have been homeschooling them at the outset of their school years.  This is just another in a long list of reasons why parents are horrified and infuriated by what's going on in Government Schools, and why more and more are turning to either private schools or homeschooling.

First time I have seen school parents step up against the school perverts in a long, long time. I hope it snowballs.

This is the way I look at it, we’ve got a few last chances to VOTE THEM OUT.

Otherwise, we shall have to BEHEAD THEM.

Those are the choices, and the choice is ours.

As a pro-life person I suggest we vote them out.

Puyallup

I've seen that name in print but don't believe I've ever heard it pronounced. Will someone spell it phonetically for me, separating the syllables?

I've heard it pronounced both pew-allup and poo-yallup. It's derived from an Indian name so I'm not sure that the English pronunciation is firmly etched in stone.

It’s very sad when there is just one of these incidents - even sadder when there are so many.

FYI to metmom.

I can only suppose the sex offenders could also be teachers, secretaries, gym teachers, janitors, etc. Leftists are morally sick.

There is a “facility” less than a mile a way from my house, tucked into a community for seniors, for out of state juvenile sex offenders from Washington DC.

Nobody knew what it was until three of them escaped over an six foot privacy fence used as a security fence for this facility. An elderly lady was attacked (at 9 am) in front of her dentist’s office across the street. The escapee/perp was a 200lb 17 yr old. His original criminal records, of course, that landed him in this place for sexual offenders, are sealed.

All hell broke loose when the local news learned about this “facility” and the six foot privacy fence meant to keep the sex offenders inside. And the fact that nobody in the closest vicinity knew it was there.

Most people here seem to pronounce it pew allup. Not sure what the Indian pronunciation is.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Proper pronunciation is pyoo-al-up (that’s “al” as in Alan, not as in all). I lived down the road from there for a number of years; got to hear it pronounced many times!
