William ‘Cold Cash’ Jefferson (D-Frigidaire) must report to the cooler soon

I’d honestly forgotten that William Jefferson, Democrat, Louisiana, wasn’t already in jail. It’s been about two and a half years since former Louisiana Rep. was sentenced to 13 years in prison for soliciting bribes, money laundering and other assorted crimes, which culminated in the authorities discovering $90,000 in cash in Jefferson’s freezer hidden in boxes of pie crusts and Boca burgers. Jefferson is just now about to begin serving the time:

A former Louisiana congressman who infamously was caught with $90,000 in cash hidden in his freezer will have to begin serving a 13-year bribery sentence within the next two weeks, a judge ruled Friday. Democrat William Jefferson, who represented parts of New Orleans for nearly 20 years, was convicted and sentenced back in 2009 for taking roughly $500,000 in bribes and seeking millions more in exchange for using his influence to broker business deals in Africa. But he has been free on bond, living in New Orleans while appealing his conviction.

IIRC this is the skeeziks that diverted Nat Guard resources aka trucks and helicopters to rescue his sorry __ during Katrina. IIRC he wanted the Guard to airlift his freezer at that time also.

“It is an ill wind that blows no good!” - Mr. Jefferson’s final error was, I believe, requesting emergency transportation to his house by the National Guard following H. Katrina’s visit. Too much smoke for there to be no fire!

You’d think that he would have been able to bribe his way out of that situation, wouldn’t you...

An article from the Times Picayune

William Jefferson should serve his 13-year sentence in a minimum-security prison, judge says

Alexandria, Va. -- Former Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, must report to prison by May 4 to begin serving his 13-year sentence on bribery and public corruption charges, more than two years after he was convicted and almost seven years after news of a federal investigation of his dealings became public. Judge T.S. Ellis III rejected a motion Friday by Jefferson's lawyer, Robert Trout, and supported by lead prosecutor Mark Lytle, that Jefferson be allowed to wait until the Bureau of Prisons assigns him to a specific facility, a process that usually takes 30 to 90 days.

After 2½ years of freedom, Ellis said, it is time for Jefferson to go prison. end snip

Yes, he refused to get in the helicopter without his freezer.
