Tom Smith [for PA Senate] Sporting Double-Digit Lead in Own Poll [PA GOP Establishment Losing]
National Journal ^ | 4/18/2012 | Sean Sullivan

Posted on 04/22/2012 6:00:18 PM PDT by JediJones

The poll shows Smith at 35 percent, leading former state Rep. Sam Rohrer, who registers 16 percent in the poll. Businessman Steve Welch, who was endorsed by Gov. Tom Corbett and the state Republican Party is at just ten percent in the survey. Thirty-one percent remain undecided and two minor candidates register single-digit percentage support.

Smith -- who has infused his campaign with millions of dollars in personal money and is outspending the competition -- led Rohrer 29 percent to 14 percent in the previous internal poll his campaign released. That survey was conducted from April 9-11.

The primary election is just six days away and Smith appears to be in the frontrunning position. If Welch loses -- something that appears a likely proposition right now -- it's a blow to the state GOP establishment that supported him. Corbett's endorsement paved the way for other Republicans leaders to get behind him, but now, some Republicans are publicly questioning the governor's decision to get behind Welch and the strength of the businessman's campaign operation.

This is the guy who's going to go up against Bob Casey Jr. who ousted Santorum. Probably going to be a tough fight since the Caseys are the closest thing to the Kennedys Pennsylvania has. Some PA freepers seem to be backing Sam Rohrer, others Tom Smith. I've been seeing ads from Tom Smith for months, just recently some from Steve Welch, and have never seen one for Sam Rohrer.

This link has some info on Welch, who registered as a Democrat, donated to Joe Sestak and voted for Obama in the Democrat primary (at the time Rush was running Operation: Chaos to get Republicans to vote for Hillary).

Sam Rohrer is seen as a hero by many in the TEA party and many senior citizens because he has--quite unsuccessfully--championed the total elimination of funding public education through property taxes.

He ran very distantly behind now-Governor Tom Corbett in the 2010 Primary.

Unfortunately most Rohrer supporters closely resemble the "True Believer" profiled in Eric Hoffer's book by that title.

My vote is going to Sam Rohrer. Tom Smith is a nice man...but he couldn’t elaborate on a single answer he gave at a Tea Party sponsored ‘meet the candidates’ event here in Pa. a few months ago. Just not ready for prime time.

The ads here are rather amusing, mostly Welch vs. Smith and vice versa on who was the bigger former Democrat.. Let them eat their own.

Go Sam.

..and Welch lost me completely when he said he supported Sestak. I never could stand that Clinton planted weasel. When I confronted him on it personally, he contined to try and tell me what a crooked guy Curt Weldon was...I shut him down. Weldon was never indicted, never charged, the whole nvestigation just up and disappeared after Sestak won. I will never forget or forgive that. I hope the Pa. GOP gets a long deserved wakeup call..and sends their fair haired boy packing.

Both Smith and Welsh are really Democrats with a lot of money. Rohrer is the real thing.

Finally heard a Sam Rohrer ad on the radio today so maybe he saved his money for a last-minute push. The ad said he was endorsed by Michelle Bachmann and Herman Cain.

There was also an ad with the tri-state Independence Hall Tea Party endorsing Tom Smith today. However this is the same “weak tea” party that was one of the first and maybe only to endorse Romney.

I also noticed Tom Smith was endorsed by Steve Forbes.

What would be really sweet is if Welch finishes third. It would be even sweeter if he finishes fourth. Sweetest would be dead last.
