On good-bye tour, Gingrich touts ability to be Romney surrogate

By NBC's Andrew Rafferty

MOORESVILLE, NC -- Even though his presidential campaign "will go bye-bye," Newt Gingrich on Thursday said he and his wife plan to campaign through the fall to help presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.

"I'm going to look at how I can be helpful, because I suspect people will still show up to hear me," Gingrich told voters at luncheon here. "Callista and I are going to campaign through October."

Though today, just 25 people attended the midday event here, leaving a roomful of empty chairs. Some of those seats were taken by Secret Service, an area the campaign has taken heat for recently because of the thousands of dollars the protection was costing taxpayers, even Gingrich he had become more of a sideshow than serious contender for the GOP nomination.

After losing the Deleware primary on Tuesday, the latest in a long string of electoral defeats, the former Speaker of the House acknowledged he will end his campaign next week. He will continue with his packed schedule through North Carolina, saying he felt an obligation to fulfill previous commitments here.

"The campaign will go bye-bye, but I'll be a citizen," Gingrich told a supporter asking about the candidate's future. "I've been an active citizen since I was 15."....

Was he on TV and you heard him say this or was it on his twitter account or is this just the continued string of bogus articles say he’s dropping out to support mitt? Never heard anything of the kind from NEWT.

They’ll claim Mitt was their only shot and anyone else would’ve lost by a bigger margin.

We have many of these people on the record saying Mitts electability and ability to beat Obummer is top notch. They will not be able to back peddle on this. Levin tonight is starting to hold Rove accountable for this lousy electoral map he made up. I am positive others in the movement like Rush and folks that said Mitt was a mistake are not going to let them slid after pushing so hard for this outcome. Ann Coulter will have to hide out in San Fran for a decade if Mitt loses this it will be so bad.

He’s quoted in this article and no journalists are assigned to him. I have no reason to doubt its authenticity, but there’s always that chance. IOW, you could sure be right.

Also, as you know, he doesn’t get media coverage on TV, unless it’s negative.

Hillary Clinton is not the GOP candidate, Mitt Romney is. Using Ms. Clinton as an example is useless, meaningless and not worth commenting on. If a blind monkey, with one hand tied behind his back was running for POTUS against Obama, the monkey will win, not because the monkey is smart or capable, but...because any vote not cast against Obama is a vote to destroy our nation.

You may not care about your kids, or grandkids, or children yet to come, but I do. And....IMHO, for the future of our children and our great nation, for me, it’s “ANYBODY BUT OBAMA”, period!!! For goodness sake, get real. Newt, did, Rick did, Perry did, Cain did, Palin did, etc. That is good enough for me.

I like your idea of governor Perry as running mate.

Consensus says, Governor Perry won't like it AT ALL!!

And I agree with that. I was just putting it out there, that I think Romney has Governor Perry in mind.

Yep, I think you could have guessed one. I know I did. They think they can post that crap anonymously, but that’s a false assumption.

Be well!!

Damn. Now all I got to vote for on May 8 is to define marriage as a man and a woman.

Sarah Palin is an infinitely kinder person toward Willard Romney than I am. There is no one in America he could select, including Palin, that would induce me to vote for him of my own free will.

All these dream Prez/Veep combos sound nice, neat, and swell but, if Willard Romney is the Republican candidate for President, he will be elected without my vote.

Newt made another stop in Conover, N.C. this morning. Here’s a local newspaper report. These Carolina stops were already scheduled and he felt an obligation to honor those commitments. Good man.

I disagree that Sarah Palins judgement is hampered by her kindness.

I trust her judgement.

Actually, we are in agreement. I did not intimate, or intend to say, that her judgment was hampered by her kindness. No problem here.
