The challenge is daunting for Nicholas Sarkozy. The second round of the French Presidential elections will be decided by the transfer of votes.
For the French Jewish community, appalled by the murders in the Jewish school in Toulouse, one of the key issues is how willing each candidate is to fight the new anti-Semitism that has developed under the mask of anti-Zionism.
Nicolas Sarkozy has developed strong links with the French Jewish community; he has a deep knowledge of Israel and a deep sympathy for this country, which he uses sometimes for chiding the Israeli government. France has become the major supporter of Israel in advocating a firm stance against Iran.
The question arises: how will the need to think about future political coalition-building, future governing circles, affect the two men's positions, and how will the results of the first round change the outlook?
The main question that arises for the Jewish community, if François Hollande becomes the President of France, is the influence that might be exerted by those socialist leaders who have negative views towards Israel's policies. Beyond the socialists, but still in Hollande's camp, are the leftist parties and the Greens who express a deep hostility towards Israel and are at the forefront of every anti-Israel demonstration, declaration and petition. The fact that Jean Luc Melenchon, the charismatic leader of the renewed Communist party, only managed a disappointing 11% result, might well reduce its impact on French foreign policy, but I expect a surge in leftist and Communist manifestations of anti-Zionism.
The French Jewish community which is, regardless of its political leanings, very close to Israel, will need to face these new challenges.

The re-emergence of the hardcore communist left, led by Mélanchon, and other far left groups like the greens and ecologists, who have a long tradition of anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and support for the Muslims and Palestinians is a huge problem for Hollande.
Hollande must unite these fringe far leftist groups to win, and include them in his government if he wins, which is likely.
Israel will no longer have a friend and supporter in France, and the groups that demonstrate for the end if Israel, and are behind the BDS movements around the world, the Gaza flotilla, etc will be in power in France.
What can be said? We just have to wait and wonder if the world is going to go on fire yet again...
I bet many French Jews are contemplating leaving France to go to Israel. It’s going to get very ugly in France for Jews under Hollande. The left LIVES to stick it to the Jews and the many muslims in France are licking their lips.
I just don’t understand why the majority of Jews vote socialist ,especially since socialist have a record of mistreating and murdering Jews.
In the U/S/, socialist = Democrat.
A lot of Western Europe is becoming an Islamist colony. Are the Greens, Socialists, Communists stupid enough to think that, once they have driven off the last Jew, the Islamists won’t come after them? The left hates Western civilization so much they would rather see it replaced with an Islamic theocracy.
Thanks Cincinna.
No need to wonder my dear. The fuse is lit. It’s just a matter of when the flame hits the powder.
My elderly mother keeps saying that the times remind her of the eve of WWII.
So far, the only politician with the correct stance on this is Marine Le Pen.
You are right. Many Jews have already made plans to leave France.
The French people have a terrible history of anti-Semitism. It is almost part of their DNA.
That is very true in the US, where Obama got 78% of the Jewish vote in 2007.
It is the opposite in France. Sarkozy and his UMP party have always had the support of the Jewish community in France, and still does.
WRONG! Sarkozy has always been against it, has deported radical Islamists, raided their hate filled mosques, and put in place a program to cut in half the number of immigrants.
Sarko has always Savored “immigration choisi” allowing only people who share France’s western culture, values and language, who are willing to assimilate, come into France.
Hollande wants to give immigrants the right to vote.

She’s more right than she knows I suspect.
Sarkozy has delivered some rhetoric about the need for less immigration, but his actual results have been meager, and I would argue that his rhetoric has mostly been a reaction to Le Pen, who we should remember achieved close to 20% of the vote primarily on the immigration issue.
If he hadn't been afraid of even more voters shifting to Le Pen, Sarki's response would have been even more meager.

In an interview with Radio J, the French radio station of the Jewish community in France, Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his strong, enduring, non conditional support for the State of Israel as a Jewish state. He could not have been clearer or more forceful.
