With the price of ammunition, I am sure that at least one deputy volunteered to properly dispose of it.

"It's very explosive, so if there is fire in your house it can go off and then we're putting our friends at the fire department and our neighbors at risk," said Officer David Studder with the Mason City Police Department.

Now, that's how you strain a rationale.

I am sure that at least one deputy volunteered to properly dispose of it.

When my Grandmother's husband (not Grandpa) passed away, she was going to clear out his liquor cabinet. "Just junk it all", she said.

Dad and I got in the car and drove most of a night to rescue it. It was 1000's of dollars in (mostly) single-malt, and high-end blended scotch. Easily enough to stock a bar, and it kept us in high-tension booze for years.

The real prize was most of a case of turn-of-the century Napoleon Brandy. I literally fished it out of the trash. She was throwing it away "Because it was Old".

So....I can see where there'd be a call for a program like this. Lots of widows cleaning out their husband's gun collections, and such.

Does this alarmist Police Officer know how to check the MSDS?

Here's the pertaining section of the Remington MSDS for loaded ammo.

V. FIRE HAZARDS

Flammable Properties: May ignite if heated to 250F. Will ignite when exposed to flame and high temperatures. Be cautious of low-energy fragments.

Extinguishing Media: Flood fire with water to fight fire and cool shells. If no water is available, use carbon dioxide, dry chemical or earth.

Fire-Fighting Instructions: Evacuate area immediately. Deluge area with water. Wear full fire-fighting protective gear including face shield or SCBA to protect from fragments.

It's very explosive

Yes, there are so many fatalities from spontaneous ammunition explosions it has become a national emergency!

So please give your valuable ammunition for free to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Dept.

***”It’s very explosive, so if there is fire in your house it can go off and then we’re putting our friends at the fire department and our neighbors at risk,” said Officer David Studder with the Mason City Police Department. ****

Many years ago the NRA did tests of cooking off boxed ammo. They found that boxed ammo will pop but did not have enough velocity to endanger firefighters.

Ammo cooking off in a rifle chamber is dangerous as it is enclosed.

And since when did ammo come with an expiration date! I’m still shooting ammo I bought 42 years ago, and a friend of mine was shooting WWII vintage Russian ammo in his Tokarev pistol.

Ammunition Collection Day(IA) at the Mason City Police Department.

“It’s very explosive,
so if there is a fire in the Police Station,
it can go off and then we’re putting our neighbors,
friends and firefighters around the Police Station at risk,” said Officer David
Studder with the Mason City Police Department.``

That`s why we are getting rid of all the ammunition {except for 6 bullets per cop] in the Police Station and blowing it up at the dump.

This is about as dumb as a rationale as I’ve ever heard...what if your cat is playing with a round and hits the primer with it’s claw? Oh my! The sky is falling!

Yeah...and if you have a fire in your house, that gas line ain’t gonna be acting too nice either...sheesh!

I say any fool stupid enough to fall for this BS, doesn’t need ammo and would probably not be on our side anyway.

A few years ago a guy on my island had a fire and bullets were flying around the neighborhood. It's a legitimate concern.

On Saturday, Cerro Gordo County hosted an ammunition collection day. Folks are encouraged to drop off their unused, unwanted or expired ammunition.

So, what exactly is their legal authority to do such a thing? Can they do the same thing with old food items? Household trash? Old cars? How about elderly relatives?

Memorable FReeper Labgrade died because the fire department would not approach his burning home because of ammo stored therein.
