Amen to that, Kathy! They soldiered on through conditions our military had never faced before. God Bless them - they set the standards we have tried to match in later campaigns.

Welcome to the Canteen, cmomm44...we thank you for your service to our country, and most especially at Normandy.
The 83 foot cutters served during WW II and after the war ended. They were designed for off-shore ASW patrol. Sixty took part in the Normandy D-day invasion as rescue craft. Another fifty-four served in the Pacific. After the war ended sixty-one served in the USA as SAR and harbor entrance patrol cutters.

WOW, I don’t know where to begin as I sit here looking through my sea service book.
I was a crew member aboard the USNS Brostrom, in several unlicesed engine room positions, from April 1970 until December 1972.
I left the Brostrom to return to San Francisco to sit for my Engineering Officer License. I was sucessful and was issued a License for Steam and Motor Unlimited Horsepower.
I served on several other ships after that, but was not assigned to the Brostrom again.
The Brostrom was a heavy-lift ship and could lift 150 tons with either of two large booms mounted amidship. We carried military cargo from various locations in the Far East to various ports in Viet Nam. We carried break-bulk cargo, vehicles, mike-8 landing craft, barges, tugboats, etc..
A very interesting time in my life. A good ship and a good crew.
I resigned in Dec. 1975 at the insistence of my wife who was unhappy that I was gone all the time. Bad decision on my part as we were later divorced. I should have divoeced her in 1975 and stayed on the ships.

Yes, there was a plaque mounted somewhere, I have forgotten exactly where, that gave the same information that is posted in this thread, complete with the engraved image.
I am pretty sure that all Navy ships, named after a deceased service member, has a similar plaque
The USNS Brostrom was a Navy ship, assigned to Militaty Sealift Command, Far East, homeported in Yokohama. It had an all civilian, civil service crew, many whom were retired Navy or formerly active duty Navy, like me. I was 8 yrs active duty, two deployments to Viet Nam aboard USS Coral Sea CVA-43 prior to becoming employed by Military Sealift Command, Far East.
I remember, right offhand, one retired BMC who worked his way up to being a Master. Another was a retired Mustang CDR who was the Master of an UNREP Oiler. These were not unusual, MSC is full of opportunities if you like going to sea. And I enjoyed this semi-military way of going down to the sea in ships.

Welcome aboard, Topsail!
It's rarity when one finds a reference to an old ship or air frame but a nostalgic joy, ain't it. (Sometimes not such a joy....but some to remember.)

Hi BIGLOOK,
Yes, a lot of nostalgia, and regret that I didn’t stay with it.
I still feel an affinity with the lore and traditions of the seafaring life.
It’s been said that a seafarer cannot explain why he must go to sea, and even if he could, a landsman would not understand.
