Remember how I said there’s a certain kind of conservatism which I respect more than bourgeois liberalism—Eliot is of this type. Wf course, the dichotomy he maintains is reactionary, but it’s due to a deep fatalism, not ignorance.

I believe it is Whittaker Chambers who made note of the phenomenon among Communists to despise those we would describe as liberals more than they despise conservatives. His use of the word "reactionaries" is very revealing and all the more revealing in that he expresses the generally held belief among Communists that that attitude can be ascribed to "ignorance. " Hence, the capacity of man to be educated and the perfectibility of man-shibboleths of communist doctrine.

I do not agree with the author, the importance of the article is not in the girlfriends but it his inadvertent revelation of his own communism.
