Just watch A Face in the Crowd, 1957 movie staring Andy Griffith, for a great counterpoint to the character of Sheriff Andy Taylor.

When we moved to Panama City, FL in 1951, I was 4 years old. I remember Andy Griffith appeared somewhere at the Dixie Sherman Hotel doing some of his comic routines.

I didn’t get to see him but I remember the radio played a few of them. I still remember one called: “What is was, was football” or something like that. It was pretty funny. He was just getting to be known at the time.

The inside of his head probably looks a lot like Jimmy Carter’s.

I’m pretty sure his Mayberry name was Goober Beasley; he was Gomer Pyle’s cousin. (I like to visit Mayberry a LOT!)

You are correct. Early on, the character was referred to as Goober Beasley, then later changed to Goober Pyle. For whatever reason, the writers changed the names of several recurring characters. Floyd the Barber's name was Floyd Lawson for most of the series, however, he was initially known as Floyd Colby. Hope Summers' character changed names several times - she was called Bertha Edwards, Clara Johnson, and Clara Edwards, along with other names.

There is an episode of “Leave It To Beaver” in which Beaver gets a haircut. The barber is Floyd, the same character he played on the Griffith show.

” The Andy Griffith Show is that the values were true conservative values that made America great. “

And the reruns have never been off the air.

Well, remember that Griffith’s initial fame was as a nightclub performer who’d put on his “ignorant southern rural yokel” schtick for ritzy NYC supper-club audiences. Always seemed to be a tinge of contempt towards small-town/Southern culture and values in his early humor, unlike a lot of previous rural-style comedians like Judy Canova and Bob Burns and such.

Thus, the irony that Griffith wound up headlining a show (and a brilliant classic it is) that became such an iconic fixture for solid, mid-american conservative values. A pretty miserable cuss in real-life as well. Of the two or three dozen folks I’ve talked to who have worked with Griffith or met him, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a nice word uttered about him!

I always liked his acting. The roll of Goober obviously was his calling. He was an actor in an era network TV was fit for family viewing.

I believe this is the only episode in which Gomer and Goober appeared together.

They appeared together, in one episode, in the Gomer Pyle, USMC TV show.

Maybe 10 years ago, I bought Andy Griffith’s personal binoculars off ebay. They came with a certificate of authenticity and I noticed a very old sticker giving his and his wife’s name and address in Beverly Hills or Hollywood. I got it on ebay from a pawn shop in Las Vegas.

I think this actually came from the time he was moving to North Carolina from California. There was a note that they came from a roll top desk.

I was thinking they might become more valuable after he died but the old rascal just keeps on living.
