"The good guys are winning," said the opportunist. Has Iran switched sides, too?

Iran and Syria are too much in bed together, and have been for a very long time. Maybe Erdogan sees this as a way to checkmate Iran’s ambitions in the region. Knocking off a tried-and-true ally of the Iranian theocrats is not such a bad thing.

I would not be so quick to take it on face value, though. Iran may have decided to cut its losses, and Erdogan is very much in bed with Iran, too, and if that happens, all that means is that Iran will jump into bed just as sincerely with the Arab sproingers who finally take power.

Erdogan was up Assad's tailpipe about the mass murders in the hundreds, and now it's over 9,000, possibly over 10,000. Iran not only supports Assad, the mullahs sent a few thousand thugs to help slaughter the peasants. Oh, and when Assad catches a bomb or bullet, as he will very soon, Iran will be positioned to start its own Occupy movement.

He thought he could make an alliance with one of his (and Turkey’s) long-term enemies. He erred. Turkey remains the cork in the bottle, geographically, politically, and religiously.
