Even if the released insurgents keep their word about not directly attacking US forces, what job skills do they have? If they instead become instructors for jihadis in Pakistan’s training camps, have we gained anything?

“They must promise to give up violence —and U.S. officials warn them that if they are caught attacking American troops, they will be detained once again.”

Now go away or I will taunt you a second time!

This administration is either extremely naive, unbelievably dumb or calculating and evil.

Of course, none of those are mutually exclusive when talking about Obama.

I have no problem with the US releasing these bad guys if the altitude is high enough.

This sounds a lot like the system in the Civil War and in 1800s Europe for returning enemy prisoners.

Soldiers from the “other side” were released on condition that, once released, they would no longer fight in the war. If they were caught fighting again, they were supposed to be executed or otherwise severely punished.

It didn't work very well in the Civil War, either. Read this link — the practice in the South became to put “paroled” Southern troops back into the fight, but on a different battlefield where they probably would not be recognized if recaptured.

I have trouble seeing how this parole system would work in Afghanistan any better than in did during the Civil War, but I'm not sure I want to say it's treason when a century and a half ago it was standard practice in the United States.

Here are some links to parole documents signed by Confederate soldiers in which they promised not to take up arms again against the United States:

Again, I’m not defending the decision — paroles didn’t work very well during the Civil War, either — merely pointing out that this is not a new practice.

Typical of Obama. He can’t close Gitmo because of Congress and public opinion so he circumvents the process secretly.

He is the most dangerous president in US history.

I think the only reason they are producing that fertilizer in Pakistan, is because the West taught the Pakistanis how to use fertilizer for high-yield agriculture in order to save them from famine a few decades ago. Now, they turn a tool of goodwill we gave them into a tool of war against us. No good deed goes unpunished I guess.

Here’s a solution that will ultimately solve the problem. As we capture any insurgents that are not killed in the act of capturing them, tell the taliban and al qaeda that for every American servicemember or civilian contractor killed by terrorists, five insurgents will be executed. Bomb a market or blow up a tank, we tactically nuke your training camps and villages with populations that are sympathetic to your cause... If it continues we will nuke Mecca..
