Maurice Sendak, the renowned children's book author who revolutionized the genre, has died. He was 83.

Sendak died on Tuesday from complications caused by a recent stroke, his editor told the New York Times. He lived in Ridgefield, Conn., and was hospitalized in nearby Danbury. According to the Associated Press, Sendak had suffered the stroke on Friday.

Sendak wrote and illustrated more than 50 children's books--including "Where the Wild Things Are," his most famous, published in 1963.

A little off-center, sometimes controversial, always deeply felt --

But the coolest stuff he did was his operas:

Hansel und Grethel

The Magic Flute

While Wild Things is certainly his most famous, I think his best work was the illustrations he did for Dear Mili, a short story by Wilhelm Grimm that had been lost to time, and rediscovered in 1983.

Me too. I tried, and can still recite it.

See my tag line, which has been in employ for many years now.

That was a favorite of ours. The little bear stories were read many, many times in my house.

I know nothing about him or his personal life or beliefs....

May God rest his soul.

One of my favorite books when I was a kid.
Also gave a copy of it to my kids.

RIP, Mr. Sendak. Thank you...

The oddest part in the whole movie was the part when the creatures were going to eat the kid, but backed off when the kid claimed to be a king. Everything the kid said, they believed in almost an worshipful, adoring way.

It reminded me a LOT of democrats and their unhealthy love for BamBam...
