Lugar makes last ditch appeal to save Senate career

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Senator Richard Lugar appealed to Democrats to cross party lines and vote for him in the Indiana Republican primary on Tuesday, in a last ditch effort to save his 35-year Senate career from a Tea Party backed rival who accuses him of being too supportive of President Barack Obama.

"I've asked very candidly for support from all Hoosiers. Not just Republicans, but Democrats and independents. I'm asking for the Republican Party to expand," Lugar said at his campaign headquarters in Indianapolis on Tuesday, where two dozen volunteers rang a bell each time a voter pledged to vote for the senator.

The defeat of Lugar, one of the most prominent voices on foreign policy in Congress, would be the first loss by a Senate incumbent in the 2012 elections and would mark a major victory for the Tea Party movement to reduce the size of the federal government.

This is horrible! These radical Tea Party nuts are set to take down one of our most needed mature adult voices in the Senate!

What is it called when one of your leaders doesn't like the way the war is going and appeals to the other side for help? Hmmmmmm........

I think it's a word that starts with a T....

This is really sad.
Lugar should have read the tea leaves and announced his retirement instead of leaving the senate like this.

What is it about these old-guard politicians that make them retire so ungracefully. Lugar has been in the Senate since 1977. Retire with dignity, not with the democrats!

“...most needed mature adult voices in the Senate.”

You forgot your /Sarc tag...

After getting rid of Lugar tonight, the next important task for CONSERVATIVES is to ensure WI Gov. Scott Walker survives the attempt to recall him.

Get your wallets out!

According to Rush, Mourdock’s position on SS is that he supports the Ryan plan. As does Lugar. Nonetheless, Lugar used that to scare seniors just like Dems do. Pathetic. If he managed to win with Democrat crossovers, I’d work to have him defeated, just as I was for the defeat of Specter and Lincoln Chaffee.

I wonder if Lugar will get his revenge in the lame duck session where Obama tries to destroy the country before he’s thrown out.

With all due respect to Sen. Lugar, it’s high time we get some new people in Congress.

If he loses tonight, Lugar will either support the Democrat candidate in November or try to run as a write in, with the tacit support of the GOP.

I don’t mind appeals to the other side for legitimate reasons but in this case its appealing to the other side to help defeat a conservative and to save his own butt.

He should have promised to switch parties if elected.

Re-stoking the Tea Party flame will require incremental victories such as installing Mourdock to replace Lugar.

The next victory needed will be ensuring WI Gov. Scott Walker survives the recall attempt.

These two actions will demonstrate the Tea Party is alive and well.

Somebody tell me, what’s up after that?? Who has the next scheduled shot at replacing a RINO or defeating a Dem.

I think the vast majority of them are sociopaths. Even in the republican party

You're right, I did.

Unfortunately, the guy I pinged to the comment probably would agree with my comment, since he seems to think we should just line up behind the GOP-E, no questions asked, since they're "the adults" and opposing them is childish.

He can't do that. Indiana has a sore loser law.
