I heard about the crash, but have not kept up with it.

There is a really great program on the National Geographic channel...”Air Crash Investigation”.
It is a super program on commercial air disasters, but it is not for the squeamish.
It is remarkable how they trace events back to months before the disaster, as they go back and pinpoint the cause, sometimes due to a failure of the maintenance crew, pilot error, but also ATC.

I also heard about it yesterday afternoon, but it disappeared off the news cycles for a while, until I saw it reappear this morning at 5am.

Sometimes it's due to an deliberate act. Don't be too surprised if among the dead are a few enemies of Putin.
