As a fully ordained pastor in one of America's largest mainline denominations, as a retired military chaplain with a total of some 24+ years of service, and as a long time student of the bible and graduate of a major seminary, my opinion is that Obama shows a deep lack of knowledge about doing biblical theology.

He has made no effort to bring all of Jesus’ comments, of the New Testament comments, and of the entire biblical record on the subjects of homosexuality and of marriage to bear on the topic at hand.

He is doing “fad” theology or “fly by the seat of his pants” theology, and he has come up sorely lacking.

Anyone who ignores Romans 1&2 on this subject simply has no place in the discussion.

Romans 1: 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
Romans 2:11 For God does not show favoritism. 12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares

Romans 1, underlined clearly demonstrates that same-sex relationships are a perversion and a rejection of God.

Romans 2, underlined, clearly demonstrates that NATURE itself, written into the conscience, teaches that which is sinful and unnatural.

Therefore, they are without excuse. In their hearts, they know that they engage in unnatural behavior that is an in-your-face rejection of God.

And Jesus clearly said the biblical example of marriage is at creation: "God made them male and female, and a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two of them shall be ONE FLESH.

One flesh is impossible with same-sex relationships. It is possible only with the union of male and female, and the evidence of ONE FLESH is having one flesh literally appear in the physical word embodied, ensouled, and a living, breathing new individual in the sight of God.
