Michele Bachmann renounces Swiss citizenship

Michele Bachmann no longer wants to be a Swiss miss.

The Minnesota congresswoman asked the Swiss government Thursday to withdraw her citizenship, saying she wanted to make it clear that she was a proud U.S. citizen.

“Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978,” said Bachmann in a statement.

“I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known,” she added.

POLITICO, along with Swiss TV, reported Tuesday she was granted Swiss citizenship on March 19.

Michele: you know I love you, but you’re flakier than an over-baked croissant.

Not a bad question, responds a Birther.

I’ve never heard of it before.

Although, to be clear, she was born in the US, to two US citizens, and never renounced her US citizenship. The dual citizenship was conferred on her at marriage - and not all countries do that.

I wonder how much time she spent in Switzerland? Couldn’t have been much more than a bunch of short visits, if that much. All those children and foster kids would have made travel prohibitively expensive. :)

This is a media generated LOAD OF CRAPOLA to distract from Barry0’s middle finger to the religious people of the world with his embrace of homosexual marriage.

"Dumb....backing down just makes it worse."

Agree, plus if Obama wins a second term, however he does it, Swiss citizenship might be a very useful thing to have.

This issue would have come up in the background check for her Committee assignment.

Very foolish. The day will come when she will wish she had not done it.
Of course, if her husband retains his, she can probably get it back any time in the future.

We went through this last week. I think (unless it was different in 1978), that she was eligible for Swiss citizenship with requirements. She didn't automatically become a Swiss citizen.

Also even IF The Swiss did so, it doesn't matter. Another country can't change your U.S. citizenship status. Bachmann didn't renounce her U.S. citizenship by marrying a foreign national.

This dual citizen stuff has beenbantored about for a long time now. The Article II, Section 1, doesn't say anything about dual citizenship.

Your Natural Born Status is determined at the moment of your birth. She didn't marry the Swiss guy until 1978.
Unless you officially renounce your U.S. citizenship, or serve in the military of a foreign nation, or make war against the U.S., you maintain your U.S. citizenship as it is.

Now, if she had married the King of Swiss or started speaking Swiss..... then maybe you might have a problem.

Reminds me of a line in “Top Secret”

Hillary Flammond: My uncle was born in America.
Nick Rivers: Oh, really?
Hillary Flammond: But he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape in a balloon during the Jimmy Carter presidency.

I’m a dual citizen as well, but I should save the option to leave the US for awhile, maybe till 2017 if that monster and his creepy-crawlys win this one. Why should anyone give two shits what this woman decides to renounce, just another politician who couldn’t touch the garment of the presidency; just as bad as Hillary’s attempt to be potus, but was to ignorant to realize-—I really mean stupid-—she was running against a more favorable group. So there we have it: an affirative action president, who got 99% of the black vote, the guilty white(woman and men) vote, over 75% of the Jewish vote, and more importantly, the stupid liberal youth vote. She was clearly out of her league, just as the woman here who doesn’t want to be Suisse anymore. At least Billery got chucked a bone-—mabye Suisse Miss will get some cabinet position if Romney wins. If I get banned for this statement, I know I’m on the wrong site and will have to move on to Breibart, if or until they decide what opinions are “acceptible” or not as well, youv’e done to a few of us already-—hope not.

I don’t know the facts of this situation but that’s not the bothersome point. I find it repulsive that she felt she had to denounce her Swiss citizenship because of the political crap that it would develop. If dual citizenship whas good enough for our founding fathers it should be good enough for the present day politicians. Where are the free thinkers that endorse marriage between men separately from marriage between women. Is dual citizenship that bad a thing. I’d be proud to have it. Except with a Muslim or Communist country.
