Today the newly emerged worldview of many scientists sets caution aside and moves into immediate use of the new molecular genetic techniques in food. Scientists who question this position are often seen by their peers as heretics.... in 2006, the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved milk and meat from cloned cattle, pigs and goats for the human food chain without labelling; large biotechnology companies are already engaged in promoting transgenic livestock as a means of improving animals and their products for human consumption (Biotechnology Industry Organization, 2008);... the use of transgenic livestock in practical farming and in the food chain because release of such animals would irreversibly change the agro-bioresources and the environment; also these manipulated resources cannot easily later be withdrawn. These changes would be particularly hazardous in developing countries.

A 1000 lb beef or two 500 pounders ... that's the (basic) question.
Seems to me the 1000 would probably eat a bit less than two 500's, require a little less space and accomplish the 'task' of being butchered in a little less time.
(All the above just a guess)
The meat is immediately chilled, and other parts are set aside for later use.
What's not to like?
We are interfering with natural selection and bio-diversity; the point of no return is coming - when there are only hybridized crops and cloned livestock - genetic mutants.
Visionaries are hoarding Heirloom seeds for this eventuality - let’s pray that a breeder stock of bovines, fowl etc., are being safeguarded too.
Lots of fancy made up words that really amount to nothing
I get tired of people ringing the fire bell for a five alarm fire when the wet leaves aren’t even smoldering.
There are always going to be Luddites and there are always going to be Chicken Littles. The cult of the Apocalypse is alive and well. LOL!!!
This is quite different from "genetically manipulated" species, which involves the insertion of "foreign" genes into the organism's DNA. THAT changes the basic structures/biochemistries of the manipulated organism, and there might possibly be unexpected side effects (though AFAIK, none has ever been identified/proven).
Ahhhh, now I understand....amusement factor
It was not meant to be sensational. I think word “disaster” is justified because Dr Hodges shows a shift of the scientific paradigm (in pre-Englightment era and even during Rennaisance/Reformation) constisted of knowledge and wisdom. It is forgotten that many scientists were Christians and those who were not they respected Christian values.
Unfortunately in the era of modernity scientists rejected wisdom which resulted:
- isolation of science in the society,
- distrust in science among many people.
Science used to be road to truth. As Dr Hodges shows now science is mainly profit-oriented.
If it is not disaster then how would you call it?
a few clones a disaster does not make.
I am afraid I was not understood. Cloning is a symptom of what is happening to science. Science is another area which is being ruined. Again another symptom of that ruin is called “climat change science”.
If there won’t be enough scientists to defend science then the science will become a service for certain industries. Materialism will be leading force.
This is the problem Dr Hodges is discussing. This called in the title as disaster. Not global warming or any other junk - as I mentioned, they are symptoms of very serious problem. This crisis of science.
I am not an apologist for those who claim AGW, however, climate does change. The thing that ended the last mini-ice age was warming of the climate. Our sun is changing as is the whole solar system. Just like seasons they come they go.
I think you and I probably agree to this extent, science should be grounded in first principles. Science for science sake is frequently dangerous, Answering larger questions such as how can we be more efficient in our energy production and use are good things.
I am no fan of cloning for any of a dozen reasons. My biggest gripe is that government money is going to fund most of these projects and shouldn’t. Cloning has many uses in DNA analyses and investigations of vaccines. Other than that it is just big expensive research.
