Romney seeks evangelical votes; opposes gay marriage

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought on Saturday to calm fears that his Mormon faith would be an obstacle to evangelical Christian voters, stressing shared conservative values while acknowledging religious differences.

In a speech at conservative Christian Liberty University—where it is taught that Mormonism is a cult—Romney stressed their common goal of service to God and declared his opposition to gay marriage, a position essential for winning the majority of evangelicals in November.

"People of different faiths like yours and mine, sometimes wonder where we can meet in common purpose, when there are so many differences in creed and theology," the presumptive Republican nominee said in a commencement speech, addressing his Mormon faith.

"Surely the answer is that we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview," said Romney to warm applause. Mormons, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, view themselves as Christians.

Romney went right at the latest hot-button issue, bringing much of the audience to its feet in cheers by declaring: "Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman."

Many students and parents said that while they are wary of Romney's religion, they would rather he occupy the White House than President Barack Obama who announced his support for same-sex marriage this week. …

No kidding!

Romney stepped on his own trolling message, didn’t he.

One side of his mouth trolls for faction votes from evangelicals who can be smarmied by his being against gay marriage.

The other side of his mouth trolls for faction votes from gays and lesbians who can be smarmied by his being FOR child adoption by gays!

This is called “drooling” in some quarters.

Damn, pity I’m not evangelical. Guess I can’t vote for him then.

"bringing much of the audience to its feet in cheers"

Liberty University has lost its way. And, apparently there is just no end to the gullibility of the American public, liberal OR conservative.

I am an evangelical, Assembly of GOD. I do NOT WANT TO VOTE FOR THIS RINO! I want to vote for Allan West.

Shooting like that is voting for Romney, in my opinion. Then again, voting for Obama is double barreled.

So if your choices are only Mitt or Obama what are you going to do? Vote for Obama, or not vote for Mitt? Winds up being pretty much the same thing.

Do like I did with mccain...hold my nose and ask God’s forgiveness. I may dislike his socialism, but I sure dislike the 2 spend-a-holic Marxist MORE. They will be the ruination of the USA as we know it with another 4 years, best hedge bet is to strongly FLIP both houses. Sen Bob Corker of TN is up, no strong serious GOP contender. And he is a multi-millionaire in his own right, he is a fence straddler. Will vote for his opponent. It won’t matter there if my vote is ‘thrown’ away and maybe there will be a miracle pulled off if enough educated voters in TN will do the same.

BUT will hold my nose and vote for the lesser of 2 evils, which still gives you an evil.

It’s the way any but the romneybots feel. What they see in him I do not know, sure he is faithful to his wife, but that has nothing to do with what kind of political practices he has. Never saw what they saw in Newt either, with his freight train of baggage and green crap he has been spouting of late, 0 was waiting to drop.

Opps33, I think most of us at FR feel and think the same. WE know Mittens socialistic record, Romneycare and his plans to keep and tweak 0’care which will be a disaster for Seniors and Ret. Military. Who paid their taxes, blood, sweat and tears, and continue to pay co-pays and premiums monthly which are due to rise over the next 3 years by a substantial amount, while their small COLA raises will not cover the cost of it. Much less the extra cost of food, fuel, electric, housing, etc. But congress will get a large raise each year. Their pay raises should be voted on by the people and cannot exceed the COLA raises given to Ret. Military or Seniors.

Until congress is placed on BC/BS and have to make payments nothing will change, they get Platinum health care for life, while our way of life gets chopped out from under us, as they make us SLAVES to them for 6 months of the year, and are looking for more ways to extend that to forever.

THEY MUST BE MADE TO LIVE UNDER THE SAME LAWS THEY FORCE ON US!

TERM LIMITS TOO! No more dynasties, no more giving your seat to your son or daughter like they do in Memphis.
