The very argument you make shows why this case is ripe for reversal. The government in this case IS limiting his 1st amendment rights.
For those in the miniority community who were offended by his comments, my grandmother had a comment which is appropriate for their feelings: If the shoe fits, ware it.
Even a good alias and max privacy settings won't help if one of your Facebook "friends" takes offense at something you say and decides to rat you out to your employer or the media.
Since I like venting opinions that some people in the outside world would find controversial, not even my wife knows what handle I use on FR, and I give nobody on FR my real identity.

That might depend on what the policies stated. I couldn’t even work on a campaign at HCA unless I had permission to do so. I can only imagine what the policies are at a government run entity.

You know, your right... the thought never crossed my mind that what we have here is a government employed person... regardless of whether at the Fed or local level, fire fighters are public employees, plus what he said was not intended for public consumption.

Hey, the police advise people to sue people who didn’t like what someone says on facebook that the police haven’t even viewed. The police are giving legal advice re: civil litigation now. Florida’s infested with Obama speech squelch squads. Police encourage people to sue other people who post at fb. for reals
