Francois Hollande becomes France's new president
BBC News, Paris ^ | May 15 2012 | Hugh Schofield

François Hollande has been sworn in as president of France, becoming the first Socialist leader in 17 years to occupy the Elysee Palace.

He named close aide Jean-Marc Ayrault as his PM. Mr Hollande is now to visit Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

Mr Hollande called for "a compromise" over the German-led focus on austerity as the way out of the eurozone crisis.

Stock markets and the euro have fallen amid continuing political uncertainty in Greece.

The handover of presidential power in France is a strange mixture of tradition and improvisation. There is tradition in the quasi-monarchical ceremonies, such as the presentation of the gold Legion of Honour chain.

But the Fifth Republic is still a youngish institution, and much is left to the incoming head of state to choose how to run his day.

Francois Hollande wanted to present a new, modest, sober image of the presidency. So his four children and other family members were notably absent from the Elysee (a deliberate contrast with Nicolas Sarkozy's investiture).

And then in the afternoon the new president paid visits to memorials in Paris dedicated to two of his personal heroes: the late 19th-Century reformer Jules Ferry and the scientist Marie Curie.

All in all, Inauguration Day is an odd kind of day for any new French president, not helped in Mr Hollande's case by the awful weather. By the end, everyone is impatient to get down to business. Which is just as well, given the state of European affairs.

Mr Hollande was sworn in for a five-year term at the Elysee Palace in central Paris.

Outgoing President Nicolas Sarkozy shook hands with his successor in the palace's courtyard before leading him inside for a private meeting, at which France's nuclear launch codes were handed over.

This is no different than Jerry Brown being elected governor of California.

....and the result will be the same.

I wonder if it means anything that Hollande’s plane was hit by lightening.

The people voted....they have a right to choose their leader....and they deserve to be punished.

In a very odd, highly partisan, cold, monarchic, ceremony, Hollande was formally proclaimed President. (Unlike the US, there is no oath.)

Hollande’s four children, by former girlfriend Segolène Royal, were not present, nor were any other family members, only his live-in girlfriend, Valerie Trieweiller.
In contrast to Sarkozy’s inauguration where his wife, three sons, his mother and father, his brothers and their families were present.

It was a strictly partisan, Socialist Party affair, with all past Socialist Prime Ministers, the illegitimate daughter of Mitterrand, Mazarine, and othe Socialist Part stars present.

Hollande’s speech was mediocre, full of the usual socialist platitudes about “economic justice” “social justice”, saving the planet, etc Obama redux!

The beginning of the video shows Sarko and Carla leaving the Élysée Palace to cheers and applause.
In a breach of etiquette, Hollande did not accompany the departing President to his car.

Mr Normal, François Hollande, has “no show” “no work” Soprano style patronage jobs with an income of €350,000 per year, and a real estate portfolio worth more than half a million euro. He rents out one Paris apartment for €3000/ month. This is not the wealth of the “Mr Average” or “Mr Normal” that Hollande pretends to be.

There is nothing wrong with earning large salaries, or owning real estate to live in, or for investment. It is just socialist hypocrisy to pretend this is normal or like the average person. Not surprising from François and live-in girlfriend, Valerie. BoBos (Bourgeois Bohemians) to the max.

there was a thread earlier (sorry, meant to ping you but got distracted) ... after the ceremony Hollande rode down the Champs Elysee in an open car, and it immediately started to rain.

It will be hilarious to watch France’s “free shit armies” go nuts when they find out there’s no more “other people’s money” for them to mooch. It will be a little preview of America when the bums, deadbeats, and parasites who comprise the Democrat party base find out the same thing.
