When Ryan Young, a butcher at the Del Rey Oaks Safeway, stopped a customer from hitting his pregnant girlfriend in the store last month, he won praise from the police department.
But Safeway slapped Young with a suspension — without pay — while the company investigates the altercation.
The story, which appeared Tuesday on KION, has spurred a public relations headache for the supermarket chain. Its Facebook page was peppered with outraged comments.
"Safeway is taking this matter seriously," Safeway spokeswoman Wendy Gutshall said in a statement. "We have store security video of the incident and have been engaged in a careful and thoughtful forensic review of what transpired."

While I have a screen name here, anybody could figure out my real name by doing a Google search but I've been using SamAdams76 for so many years now that it's almost become a second name for me. If somebody shouted Sam Adams in the street, I'd turn my head! If I ever did go back to my real name here, I'd have to add (a/k/a SamAdams76) so people would know who I am.
Anyway, screen name or not, I always try to be polite to people here. I can get sarcastic at times but I don't think I've every been nasty or cruel. I think that people who are that way must be little people who get no respect in the real world so they try to make something of themselves behind a keyboard. Kind of sad, really. They are the kind of people that probably kick their dogs and go out of their way to run over squirrels on the road.
But we fired the guy right away.

Take comfort in the fact that you are right.
As a matter of fact I would say exactly what I said to you to your face. Reading the whole article would have cured you of any delusion that the girl was the Butcher's girl friend. Take your ribbing like a man and quit whining about it, you are only making yourself look petty.

PS, almost every FReeper has been where you are now, they misread an article and made a comment that seemed stupid on the surface, and usually was, and learned to read articles all the way through before commenting, at least some of us learned, and we were harassed unmercifully for it, some of it a lot worse than you recieved. As I said, take your standard FR ribbing like an adult.

!) Sorry I ganged up on you about your mistake. The way the posts are logged, one has to read a lot of them to see that you were bombarded
2) Safeway isn’t in a difficult situation for any reason other than their “one size fits all” response. And that is probably due to some overpaid asshole “lawyer” whose main “job” is to keep the company from being sued ( as opposed to doing the right thing). They didn’t need to cut off the employee’s pay while they “investigated” that which the local police had done already. One of Safeway’s executives was a neighbor of mine ( in Danville, CA) until he passed away. He rose to be President from a store manager. He is probably turning in his grave over how this has been handled. Through their moronic “rules” they have managed to turn something that they could have touted as a positive into a public relations nightmare.
