Police in Glasgow, Scotland arrested six people over anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook that mocked the Jewish community of Giffnock, the BBC reported Wednesday.
The page, titled "Welcome to Israel, only kidding you're in Giffnock," included a number of offensive posts against the Jewish community and received nearly 1,000 “likes” until it was shut down.
Fans of the page posted comments ranging from "Jewish scum" to "F*** the Jewish Zionist" while another person wrote: "Hebrew is not needed in the train station [because] all the Jews are f***ing rich c**** they have gold plated Bentleys," the Jewish Chronicle reported.
The page's profile picture was reportedly a photograph of the late Rev Ernest Levy, a Holocaust survivor and a prominent Glasgow communal leader.
The six people arrested were charged with a breach of the peace with religious and racial aggravations. One other man was detained and later released without charge pending further inquiry.
"This was a very complex and protracted inquiry that required assistance from many departments of Strathclyde Police and the support of the procurator fiscal at Paisley,” said Chief Police Inspector Alan Murray. "I hope it clearly demonstrates that Strathclyde Police will not tolerate hate crimes of any kind.”
"It should cause anyone who believes they can get away with this sort of behaviour to think again," he added.
The Community Security Trust (CST), which helps protect the Jewish community in the UK, issued a statement saying, "CST welcomes the arrests of suspects regarding alleged anti-Semitic statements. Glaswegian Jews should be reassured that local police take anti-Semitism seriously, and that they are working with CST and the rest of the Jewish community in tackling it when it does arise.”

I of course agree that the anti-Semitic posts are boorish, offensive, stupid and vile, but I can’t help wondering what other opinions can get you arrested in that country.
Half the anti-Muzzy posts on Freep would be hate crimes, I think, especially the “make one big parking lot out of them” posts.

On the street, preaching the Bible and stating homosexuality is a sin and wrong can get you arrested as well.
Happened when some homosexual took offense and called the police and the police went and arrested the preacher.

The six people arrested are five men aged 18-21, and one 15 year old. This therefore would seem to be an incident more about young, braindead idiots rather than some orchestrated campaign.
Scotland has no history of antisemitism, and this incident should not be taken as evidence that Scotland does. Far right groups who epouse anti-semitism, such as the BNP, have only fringe support in the UK, and have no support in Scotland. Even the pro-Palestine groups have minor public support.
Scotland in fact has been known for its openness and tolerance of Jewish immigrants: Lithuanian Jews in the 1920’s, Nazi refugees in the 30’s and 40’s, Polish Jews after the war.
There are areas well known and celebrated as Jewish: the affluent Newton Mearns just outside Glasgow, Giffnock, Garnethill in the city itself.
There have been prominent Scottish Jews in politics and esp business, like the Weisfelds who were in the 1970’s and 1980’s the best known dept store owners in Scotland along with the non-jewish family who owned House of Fraser.
The UK has always had little antisemitism compared to Europe, and Scotland, Wales and NI have had much less than England (which itself has had only a minor history of anti-semitism).

At worst, all that should happen is the police go round and give them a verbal warning not to post such comments again.
If they continue to do it, then arrest them. But not charge, just put the fear of god in them. If that dosent work, then you charge them.
Its because the police can claim its a public comment, which SHOULD be for, say, actual public racism/antisemitism like graffiti daubed on a synagogue, that type of thing.
But to arrest and charge a group of youths, who it seems arent BNP/Nazi organised thugs, for a first offence, seems stupid.
My guess would be that in order to arrest people who make anti-Muslim comments, and avoid charges of favoritism, they have to at least make a show of evenhandedness.
I don’t think most of us here are worried about anti-semitism in Scotland. It’s the fact that one can be arrested for posting crude stuff on Facebook. Creepy.
