Texas Poll: Dewhurst 40, Cruz 31
The Weekly Standard ^ | May 21, 2012 | Michael Warren

Posted on 05/21/2012 12:00:07 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch

The Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Texas is now within nine points, according to a new poll. A University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll shows Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst with 40 percent, while his challenger, former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, is at 31 percent. Former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert is in third at 17 percent.

With the the May 29 primary just a week away, Cruz appears to be gaining ground on Dewhurst. He's been aided in his effort to be the conservative alternative to Dewhurst by an endorsement from Sarah Palin, who recently recorded a robocall to Texas voters. "Ted Cruz has defended the Constitution, U.S. sovereignty, and over three million veterans, and he's endorsed by Tea Party Express," Palin says.

Dewhurst, meanwhile, has a new ad featuring Governor Rick Perry, who endorsed his lieutenant last month.

The Dewhurst campaign and its surrogates seem to have recognized the Cruz threat in recent weeks, with both Dewhurst and a pro-Dewhurst super PAC airing ads accusing Cruz of not being a true conservative.

But the momentum may be on Cruz's side, not just in the polls but also in the last-minute money game. The Cruz campaign announced late last week that it raised over $542,000 between April 1 and May 9 and has raised $6.1 million overall. Those are slightly higher numbers than Dewhurst's. While Dewhurst has the backing of the Texas Republican establishment, Cruz has garnered support from national and local Tea Party and conservative movement types.

If no candidate wins a majority of the vote on May 29, the race will go to a runoff on July 31. Many observers believe if Cruz can make it to the runoff, he would have the advantage over Dewhurst.

Oh. So anybody who posts in support of the real conservative Texan, David Dewhurst is a “troll”?

It’s really funny that a guy who boasts he’s a Texan by birth thinks he has it all figured out by voting for a Canadian by birth who has spent more of his adult life in New Jersey, Massachussetts, Washington. D.C. than he has in Texas.

It is so easy to fool some Texans by birth. Just ask the Bushes.

I just early voted in the Texas primary this afternoon for Cruz. However, Remember there will be a runoff between Cruz and Dewhurst 31 July which is really the more important election (early voting only during 24-27 July). It’s clear from this poll that no candidate will get 50% on May 29, so the top two candidates will go to a run-off per texas law. We’ll see then in the second round whether Dewhurst or Cruz will pick up the 20%-25% of the Vote that will go to other candidates in the first round. Turnout will be very low in the middle of the summer for a run-off election so every vote in July will be important. Make sure to mark your calendar and plan vacation accordingly

To be honest, I really didn’t know who I was going to vote for between Cruz & Dewhurst. Didn’t really know much about either one, except name recognition for Dewhurst, but after reading a couple of threads here on FR, I early voted today and went for Cruz. Hope you guys are right about him cause you made me do it - LOL.

You have no argument except to call people names.

Just like Ted Cruz has nothing to run on except campaign promises.

It seems that Dewhurst will probably be mostly ok if elected—kind of in the John Cornyn mode. Cruz is a passionate Tea Party conservative in speech. He better hold true blue if elected because you dont go peeing off Tx conservatives by lying to them. Dont mess with Tea Party Texas.

Voted for Cruz. Dewhurst looked inept in his commercials.

The name “Cruz” would be the main reason the perception would be Hispanic.

Dewhurst is the continuation of KBH for sure; Cruz is a potential conservative, but time will tell.

Excuse me, but runoff elections in Texas are held 1 month after the original primary election not 2 months. According to my calendar, that should be on June 26. June 21-24 sound like reasonable dates for early voting. I sure hope you are not correct about July, because I won't be in the US during the last 2 weeks of July. July 27 is not a Sunday, and early voting always ends the Sunday prior to the election on Tuesday.

I hereby correct myself. According the the Texas Secretary of State, the runoff date is July 31, 2012. I'm going to ask my SREC committeeman and committeewoman about getting an absentee ballot and how to get it counted. Normally ballots mailed from within the county within one is registered are not counted unless the voter is 65 or over or disabled.

“You missed the main point of my post: In order to Dump Romney ... “

GREETINGS, TIME TRAVELLER!

you seem to be behind on the news, and may want to check out the last 10 primaries, which Romney has won decisively.

... in other news:
dewhurst v Cruz goes to a runoff and CRUZ WINS IT.

Oh yeah, we could live with Dewhurst but maybe it’s time for some new blood - if, as you say, they hold true to their promises.

Is there an address in San Patricio County you could have the ballot mailed to, Paleo?

The longer KBH was there the worse she got. Dewhurst is in total negative mode unable to run on his ‘good’ record but concentrated on smearing his apponates. Can not vote for that because the way someone runs their campaign shows you how they will rule when they get to the top.
