Oh, you know the answers to this one, it was pretty obvious:

1. Overwhelmingly funding disadvantages on the conservatives part.
2. Character assassination by Romney, including lying about both candidates with add 24/7 using that funding disadvantage.
3. A conservative press that refused to vet the record of Romney.

Collectively they did. Romney never got more than 50% in states where 2 or more other conservatives where on the ticket.

The problem was to many to chose from and no one really pulled the conservatives in. Kane started to then the bimbo eruption happened. I think, had he been able to handle that and stay in the race he could have been the one to beat Mittens.
