Taxpayers in Arizona spend $125 million each school year funding more than 13,000 students who dont exist at public schools.
Thats because the state school system uses an antique budget approach that causes taxpayers to overpay, says a new report, Ghost Busters: How to Save $125 Million a Year in Arizonas Education Budget, by Goldwater Institute education director Jonathan Butcher.
The system pays for some students twice, Butcher says.
Heres how it happens.
Arizona schools are funded based on the number of students who attend each school in the prior school year, Butchers report says. However, when a student transfers out of one school and into another, the school getting the new student can apply for funding for that student in the middle of the year, he says.
But the schools dont talk to each other, nor share funds, nor computer systems, it seems. So that results in the two schools double filing for -- and getting double the taxpayer money for -- the same student. This budget snafu costs taxpayers $125 million each school year, according to Butchers estimates.
Arizona taxpayers are literally throwing $125 million school funding dollars into...
The phantom students are doubly painful, because two years ago, Arizona voters passed a temporary sales tax increase to protect schools from budget cuts during the recession, his report notes.

Anyone want to bet that this practice is confined to Arizona?
Who you going to call ?
What's all this I hear about "busting
children"?! Even if they're ghosts,
it's just wrong!
Teachers = liberals + unions + elected Democrats = cheating...
Even if they do clear the books of ghost students, they’ll not cut the budget. Taxes won’t go down. It’s all a sham.
Funny how our property taxes keep rising, but the appraised value of our homes keeps falling......
Also, the police are stopping (and ticketing) people for driving two miles over the speed limit. Guess they must need money, eh?
DEFUND socialist collectives. Pick any hundred. DEFUND them.
“Now, legal plunder can be committed in an infinite number of ways. Thus we have an infinite number of plans for organizing it: tariffs, protection, benefits, subsidies, encouragements, progressive taxation, PUBLIC SCHOOLS, guaranteed jobs, guaranteed profits, minimum wages, a right to relief, a right to the tools of labor, free credit, and so on, and so on. All these plans as a whole with their common aim of legal plunder constitute socialism.”

Socialism is plunder and death...(evidence of plunder)...here
Interesting information, yorkie. Where are they doing that, Arizona?
Oh, the appraised values in my part of Texas never fell. It’s been up, up, up. I was paying what amounted to two weeks’ income on property taxes 15 years ago and today it’s up to 2 1/2 MONTHS’ of income. How they expect me to be able to pay that, I don’t know. I haven’t been able to make simple repairs for years. It’s ridiculous. Sad to say, I can’t protest because I’m still below the neighbors so there you are.
SO TRUE, bgill!!!

13,000 students??
Teacher: Ok I'm going to take the roll call....
Casper the Friendly Ghost?
Casper Are you here??
This makes me so mad — I just knew that increase in sales tax was going to go down the drain. In Tucson, we have one of the highest tax rates in the country, yet the town is dumpy and turning more and more 3rd world. You need a tank to drive on our pot-holed streets. But, let’s just burn more money in the drain.
More money for the Democrat slush funds. Who knows how much money they have hidden here and there throughout the country and federal government?
