FORT MYERS, Fla. -

A Florida teenager had his diploma withheld and was ordered to clean the school gym as punishment for Tebowing on stage during his graduation ceremony -- and later discovered the punishment was his mother's idea.

Chuck Shriner, a 17-year-old football player at the private Fort Myers Catholic school, performed the popular kneeling-in-prayer pose Saturday and said he was shocked at his punishment, Naples News reported Tuesday

"They said what I did would give underclassmen inspiration to do something else, that it might lead to something else," Shriner said of the administration's reaction. "So they were trying to set an example."

I think it’s a good lesson for the lad that you respect the decorum during the ceremony.

If a student wants to Te-bow, do it before or after the graduation ceremony.

Based on his comment, it sounds as if the lad had some issues with the principal. I doubt he was really praying during his little show.

A Tebow is so quick, nobody could pray anything substantive during it. Unless the idea is a quick, general “God help me here.” Anyhow the little dispute with the school or whatever might not be over.

Reminds me of a story I heard during my Basic Training. It seems that two troops had finished their basic, graduated, and as they were boarding the plane to their next school, thought that it was a good time to let their DI know how they felt about the eight weeks they spent in his care. This took the form of a pair of middle finger salutes. The two troops were pulled from the plane and informed that they had to do their basic all over again. As the story goes, after eight more weeks they had certainly learned proper decorum.

I agree it was not the proper place and time to do a “Tebow” move but it won’t be long and none of us will be able to even pass gas without being penalized. Good grief, what a society we have become.

I don’t think it was about decorum, it was about respecting superiors and they obviously hadn’t learned that so back to Basic Training they went. They are lucky they didn’t get a General Discharge considering what 8 weeks of Basic costs. I almost got a Medical in Basic for complaining about my ankles hurting that a pair of arches in my boots easily fixed. That said, this is just high school, does it really matter?

But after cleaning the gym Monday, his mother -- a math teacher at the school -- told him she was the one who pushed for the punishment because she wanted to "teach him a lesson."

Sounds like the kid's mother (a teacher at that school) instigated the punishment - probably believing she had to do so to protect her job. Or maybe she was disappointed with her Mothers' Day gift.

Pretty damned sad when a gesture of faith is frowned upon by a Catholic school. Can't have that sort of thing *spreading*, nosirree. Gotta nip it - nip it in the bud!

Matthew 6:5-6 "And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say to you, They have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly."

If he was praying to inspire others, then I don't think this verse applies. If he was praying to draw attention to himself, whether just clowning or trying to make himself look like Tebow, then this is exactly the scripture that applies.

You think it was a gesture of faith? No. You can tell that he was pround of doing it "in front of Cavell." It was an in-your-face show of defiance, otherwise, why would he have to single out the principal?

Schools tell kids before graduation what kind of behavior is expected of them. The ceremony is for the parents and other relatives who paid their tuition. It is not a time for calling extra attention to themselves. They've had four years to do that. I am sure this Catholic school had baccalaureate mass where this young fellow could pray all he wants.

I wonder if the does a Tebow just before communion to draw attention to himself.
