Romney Woos Senator Rand Paul
National Review ^ | 05/25/2012 | Robert Costa

Posted on 05/25/2012 6:00:16 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Sources close to Senator Rand Paul tell National Review Online that Paul and Mitt Romney had a private meeting on Wednesday. Details of the topics discussed are hazy, but Paul — the son of Texas congressman (and presidential candidate) Ron Paul — reportedly found the meeting productive.

The one-on-one conversation in the nation’s capital lasted 30 minutes. Sources say the tone was cordial but it wasn’t meant to be an exchange of pleasantries. The Kentucky Republican focused his questions on policy.

Senator Paul is one of the GOP’s rising stars. Many of his father’s followers are wary of Romney, the presumptive nominee. Ron Paul has slowed down his campaign in recent weeks, but tension between the party’s libertarian wing and Romney supporters remains.

For now, there’s no word from Paul World beyond that; no word on whether Romney sought an endorsement or brokered a deal regarding the Tampa convention. But it’s clear Romney is intent on wooing Senator Paul, who has been touted by his father’s aides as a potential presidential candidate down the road.

Can't stand his dad, but Rand would be a pretty darn good pick

My first choice, hands down, is Allen West.

I have a dem friend at work who predicted this, that this was probably RP’s endgame with the delegate wars. He will love to hear about this.

Hopefully Rand gave Mitt some absolute terms if he wants his support, pre and post election.

Romney could do far worse than to pick Rand Paul as his VP.

Rand Paul is not shy about taking on Dem Senators, including Reid.

Wish the other GOP Senators had the same take.

To the headline: of course he does, just firms up what’s been in the rumor mill for months.

Rand Paul is excellent when it comes to fiscal and monetary policies.

But what about FOREIGN POLICY? My fear is he might be silent now but he could be as kookie as his dad.

RE: Ron Paul’s strategy is now crystal clear. All agreed???

I found it quite strange that Ron Paul would attack guys like Ric Santorum and call him a fake during the debates but never ever attack Romney.

Well on foreign policy he has already kept us out of World War Three once by refusing unanimous consent on Senator Rubio's attempt to get Georgia into NATO.

If the guy on the right was as right as the guy on the left, I'd vote for him.

As it is, while Romney appears to be very practical with the human resources he relies upon, I can't help but wonder if picking Rand Paul is more to remove him and his influence from the Senate.

Agree with you, BUT I fail to grasp the argument that we should never fix the fiscal and monetary policies and must compromise on them every single time when the choice is between a strong foreign policy and a strong economic policy.

Foreign policy can always be taken care of later. It is not possible to take care of the economy at a later date when we have become completely socialist. Once we are socialist, the foreign policy will get destroyed anyway.

Two white men on the ticket? I doubt it, unless Romney’s people are even dumber than I thought.

One thing is for sure. Rand is assertive enough that he’d insist his policy positions have a prominent place in a Romney Administration. This is a guy who stands his ground rather tenaciously.

All agreed.

Of course, Romney’s not nearly desperate enough to have to take a libertarian tea partier like Rand onto his RINO GOPe ticket, but I’m sure the niceties were performed on whatever goodies the Pauls are extracting from him.
