For most of the past decade, North Las Vegas was one of the fastest-growing cities in America.
Construction crews couldnt build houses quickly enough. New schools, parks and neighborhoods popped up seemingly overnight. Restaurants and shopping plazas overtook desert stretches, and plans were drawn for casino alley, a mini-Strip of gaming resorts.
Most residents welcomed the growth. A 2009 survey found that half the population rated the quality of life in North Las Vegas as excellent or good. Three-quarters of residents said theyd recommend living in the city.

They were never interested in safety. Self enrichment, power and control. Fire them and hire some GIs.
Warning: Due to recent police layoffs, we can no longer ensure your safety!
Big deal - Name one place where the police ensure your safety - they come after the fact i.e,
When you need help in seconds the police are only a few minutes away...
While I agree with you, it is time we quit placing the LEO profession on the pedestal of public servants. They are not. When push comes to shove, this is the way they all go. Unions.
Just wondering what some of you FReepers think. Will Obama carry Nevada this time around?
“North Las Vegas municipal workers are also among the highest-paid public employees in the country, as reported in a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce salary survey”
I do not understand why these govt. workers do not understand that they are LUCKY to have a job. They should be willing to take a pay cut if it will preserve their job.
Almost everyone I know except govt. workers have taken a pay cut since 2006. In some cases up to 50%(me). Fire them all, and see how many thousands of applicants line up to take their job at 25% less.
Why do you want GIs? You want police with military training, tactics, and combat experience? Do you think they would make better decisions? I think we need to back off the militarization of the police. I want the ‘protect and serve’ attitude, not the ‘civilians are the enemy’ attitude.
I was thinking more of older civilians who had been GIs, myself. Not talking about Delta Force or something.
The key in hiring LEOs is a mind exam the equivalent of a full-blown rectal/colonoscopy exam. Ruthless filtering to weed out the power-trip psyche.
Too late Alma. The police are now being equipped and trained in the same infantry tactics that I trained in at Fort Benning Georgia. It smells like an alphabet agency is behind it too, if you catch my drift.
Nevada has a lot of Mormons and they will vote very near 100% for the Mormon ticket.
Ok, I’m with you then. Key for me is calmer attitude and ability to defuse situations without violence.
Interesting. Nearly a decade ago, a headhunter tried to get me interested in a classified job in Nevada, where living in Las Vegas would be the idea. Was tempted for a while.
In the city of San Jose a couple years ago - the Firemen were given the choice of taking mild cuts in benefits or loosing 80 some odd fire-fighters. They took the loss of jobs as the preferred solution, then gripped about it!
I’ll bet layoffs were seniority based rather than merit based as well. Unions claim to be about brotherhood, but throw the new guys under the bus and protect the senior guys when push comes to shove.
