Not buckling up your pet in the car can mean big fines (NJ)

Judging from the alarming number of summonses issued so far for failing to buckle up in the back seat, motorists don’t seem overly concerned about the current Click It or Ticket crackdown. After all, most unrestrained drivers and passengers can afford a measly $46 fine.

But if you drive with an unrestrained pet, don’t expect a slap on the wrist.

Penalties range from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail.

Hmmm, $1000 for an animal, vs. $46 for a person. Is an animal’s life worth more than 20 times as much as a person’s?

How many months in jail if I gave him a Slurpee and was smoking?

I think you're good if you stay in New Jersey. (The east coast laws give me the shivers.)

"NJ: Come for the fines, stay for the taxes."

Funny . . . because it's true.

I’m kind of with you. I will look into a restraint. What I have been doing is attaching his leash to the seatbelt holder above the door. But I guess choking him via car crash ain’t such a good idea either:(

Someone help me here: Subaru Forester, four family members and one 70-plus pound dog that rides in the far back. No way in @#*! is he going to be able to ride restrained in the back seat with my boys. So now what? We don’t take our beloved pet ANYWHERE? I’m on my way for a hike with the boys and dog, only to get pulled over to receive a summons?

It’s one of those unknown laws already on the books now being brought to light.

“We wanted to experience real freedom, so we moved to Maryland!”

You should have kept going. Real freedom isn’t in Maryland any more.

Oh, you’d love Jersey. There are a lot of reasons in my forthcoming book “Escape From New Jersey”.

I’ll bet more illegals than dogs ride in the back of pickup trucks every day.

Both scenarios are illegal - but I can guess which one results in more action on the part of law enforcement types.

I should have put a sarcasm tag on that one. We moved from Swedesboro to Montgomery County, the epicenter of liberal lunacy. The county council actually proposed a leash law for cats. Doug Duncan, the then county executive, actually stood up and lambasted his own council, saying “A leash? Have any of you actually owned a cat? If you did, you’d know how ridiculous that idea is.” We now live in more conservative Anne Arundel County.

What is the penalty if you put him in a carrier and strap it to the roof of your car?

What if your pet is the one who's driving?

I’d want to look at the flow of money from folks who make pet restraints to the folks who thought this would be a good idea.

Yea, like we need another law.

I want a law that requires everyone to have common sense and be nice to everyone including dogs.

Your pic is so funny, looks like something my cat would try. She loves to ride in the car, drapes herself across my upper back and shoulders and immediately falls asleep. Put her in a restraint? You’ve got to be kidding.

“... dangerous to be holding your dog in your lap while driving”

I disagree. I’ve never done it but I imagine that pets in their owners’ laps are quite tranquil, as are the owner-drivers.
