Does eating organic food make you a jerk?

Jerk.

What image does that word conjure up? Is it your uncle Joe, who lives in a McMansion, complete a large staff to serve his every whim while never saying, "thank you"?

Perhaps your sister’s boyfriend who drives the Bugatti Veyron and talks about it to anyone who will listen?

Maybe a friend of a friend who dons thousands of dollars of exclusive designer clothing to go to the grocery store?

Or, perhaps, it's your next-door-neighbor who buys and eats organic food.

Whaaaat?

A new and very provocative study, "Wholesome Foods and Wholesome Morals? Organic Foods Reduce Prosocial Behavior and Harshen Moral Judgments," by Dr. Kendall J. Eskine from Loyola University New Orleans, indicates that buying and consuming organic foods can actually induce self righteousness and selfish behavior.

In other words, it can make you a jerk.

What influences someone to go organic? Organic foods in general cost more than conventionally grown foods, so why pay more for already expensive food?

Some controversial explanations are provided by the author of the study:

Not if you roll your own, but if you use it for status, yeah you’re a jerk.

My garden is organic. I use natural pesticides as much as possible but if something starts to get the upper hand, I bring out the big pharma-guns.

No. Organic just means the real food we all ate only 15 years ago. Jerks are jerks. There were jerks back then too - they were called Gormet jerks.

No.

Produce that is non organic contains pesticides and herbicides that cause neurodegenerative diseases. Produce that is USA organic has far LESS of these. (I wouldn’t trust Chinese or Mexican organic)

Produce that is organic cannot contain GMO foods. All corn and soy and lots of other things that are not organic contain GMO foods. Neurotoxins — brain destroyers -— abound in the herbicides these plants CONTAIN. When you eat them, you CONTAIN them. If you want to lessen your risk of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s or gehrig’s when you are older, you need to avoid neurotoxins when you are younger.

If you choose organic, especially in any plant that is soft without a huge protective peel (go ahead and eat non organic citrus and bananas, for example) are smarter, and kinder to your children, who will be caring for you with all of these neurodegenerative conditions.

If you choose organic meat, poultry, and dairy, you are choosing to eat animal products that have not been fed nonorganic feed.

This is only one step to actually eating real food, because organic can still mean unhealthy reliance on grains and sugars, but it is a damn good start.

Here is the way it went down in Vermont.

Rich Hippy dippy idiots move in enamored of the local rural ways.
They gain political power and outlaw stores like Kroger because they are outraged that some of the meat is raised with hormones and is slaughtered with machines or what ever.

They declare that all food should be bought from the local hippy dippy co op which charges 4x the price of the Kroger.

The local who they originally admired cant afford that and have to move away.

The rich hippy dippy organic types sit around blowing through their trust finds and smugly sniffing their own smug farts

Causation vs. Correlation fallacy. Shopping at Whole Foods doesn’t make one a jerk. Jerks just shop there a lot.

Tell me about it. My fiancee’s daughter and grandkids were just here recently from you guessed it Kalifornia. We had to go to Trader Joes and buy all organic food. The kids can only eat some horrendous dried fruit compote for a dessert. No sugar (well I understand that) but everything in their mouths has to be organic from TJ’s or Whole Foods.

We eat a very healthy well balanced diet but we felt this quiet judgmental thing going on the whole time they were here. Which I found to be annoying and pretentious. We joke about it but this guy who did the survey is spot on as far as I’m concerned.

My cousin is a food scientist. He says that “organic” is a fancy way to say “rots faster”.

I think that believing the results of this study makes psychiatrists jerks. But then I eat organic food, so maybe it’s just me.

People can eat whatever they want. Some choose organic, some don't. I really have no idea what anyone eats -- and why should I?

Of course, there are a lot of super smug people who go around telling me over and over and over and over how much organic food they eat. Yeah. Those smug little bastards are definitely jerks.

I don’t drink much anymore, I have never done drugs and I loath libs, RINOs, GOP-e, dems, politicians in general, traitors all .... I must be organic.

I like my dog over most people, maybe all people and I have guns that I am not afraid to lawfully use. Yep, I am sure I am organic.

Fact is, I am so organic that I am getting pissed off at myself for having read this rubbish lib crap. ;>)

I’d write more, but I have some bodies that I need to go bury under my house.

Diatomaceous earth (shell flour) is good too. I’ve got a bag of it that’s actually food grade. I give it to my dogs to prevent worms and dust my plants with it.

I’ve also heard that making tea from tomato plants is a good repellent.
