Over the weekend, Politico broke the news that Mitt Romney had tapped Mike Leavitt, the former Utah Governor and HHS Secretary under George W. Bush, to lead the transition effort should Romney win the presidency. This is a very worrisome signal to conservatives holding out hope that Romney will live up to his promises to fight for limited government if elected. As Ben Domenech details, Leavitt is one of the few Republicans who has been actively campaigning for governors to implement Obamacare’s health care exchanges at the state level.

Leavitt has shown time and again that he is to the left of his party—so much so that he was nearly defeated during the Republican nominating convention in 2000. The legislature has on many occasions pushed pro-growth tax policies, only to have them rejected by Leavitt. In [2001] the legislature passed a $25 million tax cut that included income tax relief. Leavitt insisted on a tax cut one-fifth that size… The only two taxes that he has reduced were the sales tax and the unemployment tax. Leavitt is a big spender extraordinaire.

Beyond the health care issue, there’s the cronyism issue involved. One of the biggest dangers of a Romney “CEO presidency” is that his business background would make him conflate being pro-business with being pro-free market. But as we’ve seen time and again, these are two separate things. As somebody who stands to personally profit if more states implement Obamacare exchanges, Leavitt clearly comes from the tradition of a Republican Party that’s perfectly okay with expanding government in the name of helping business. This is something we saw during the Bush administration, most prominently, with the subsidies for drug companies in the Medicare prescription drug law (which Leavitt helped implement ass HHS Secretary) and the Wall Street bailout.

#1: Vote Obama Out, Out, Out.
#2: Vote conservative candidates into the US House and US Senate.
#3: Then, if when Romney tacks hard left, impeach him (he's a white Republican; he can be impeached).
There is no red flag here or even a pink flag. This is like worrying about the beliefs of the moving company. Rush was all over this today and is satisfied that there is no policy coming from Leavitt.

Seriously? I don't know a single conservative that expects romney to be anything more than what he's always been. A globalist liberal in sheep's clothing. As a "Conservative" nothing romney does surprises me. I know his record and I also know that a leopard cannot change his spots. A scorpion is a scorpion and romney is a snake.

The transition plan will be Romney’s transition plan, not Mike Leavitt’s. Leavitt’s company has been hired to consult Romney on implementing Romney’s plan.
So, I will wait and reserve judgement regarding that plan until I see what Romney actually proposes and does, as opposed to projecting a plan that fits a pre-conceived notion of what someone expects that the man may do...particularly of that pre-concieved opinion fits a particular individual’s or group’s stated negative agenda about Romney...wther from the liberals or conservaitves who refuse to consider the man.
Perhaps Leavitt’s company is simply very good at organizing and putting together methodlogies and project oriented implementation steps to meet the stated goals and plans of those who hire him...perhaps that is the reason he has been hired.
Until we see what Romney actually proposes and does, all of this hand wringing, and “I told you so,” is just conjecture, and possibly political posturing around an agenda...nothing more.
What exactly does the “transition team” do? Will Leavitt be in charge of replacing all the R’s on the White House keyboards and putting real lightbulbs back in the WH offices after Obama’s crew replaces them with fluorescent crap?
Okay, I’m joking, but really — will this guy be making or implementing any policy?? Or is he just a beaurocrat doing beaurocratic stuff? It sounds to me like this is a “Utah” perk, just a bone to throw to the Utah crowd, rather than any real polical statement on Romney’s part. (Just a guess, of course.)

Whew, the voice of reason; thank you! I’ll admit it’s troubling about Leavitt pitching “Romney’s Plan”, or “Obamacare”! But I’ve never, ever seen where Mike Leavitt was a leftist! As our Utah governor, he was really quite conservative, I thought; at least as far as I know. I don’t know where all of this came from, or what got into Leavitt. As our governor several years ago, he was mostly pretty conservative, pro-life, pro-military, etc.. It makes me mad when people start calling him a leftist or a socialist!
Romney is no communist. He is flawed. We have work to do after we elect him. Understand this, and prepare to do the work of keeping this man in line....nobody said it would be easy or perfect, but once again, Romney is NO communist.
Be prepared to elect Romney, or more of oboma will be our DOOM. Get out there and VOTE, and get the word out. Let's stand together on this and move this country on to the next step, and be prepared to WORK at it.

Oh my God!!! This article convinces me that this is the final straw. Mitt Romney has done it now; by damn. We must UNITE TODAY TO STOP MITT ROMNEY.... I’m calling today for all of you to join me in voting for Barack Hussein Obama. Tell you family and friends to vote for Obama. We must stop Mitt Romney. Hell yes; having a Marxist Muslim in the White House is better than having a White House Chief of Staff like Mr. Leavitt; a holdover from the Bush Administration. Another thing that Romney will have to do to keep from being DUMPED in Tampa is to fire his new appointee Michael Leavitt to head his transition team, and replace him with someone who wants to REPEAL AND ABOLISH Obama/Romney”care” FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
