SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- A proposal in Sarasota County to allow hog hunts on a Sarasota wilderness preserve is being criticized by animal rights activists.

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune (http://bit.ly/KtJq70), local officials are considering whether to allow a group of 30 hunters with dogs and knives to go into a Sarasota County wilderness preserve for nighttime hog hunts in December and again next March.

County commissioners have postponed a decision on the proposal to do more research.

Officials from the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the county say legions of wild hogs are tearing up pristine lands in Deer Prairie Creek Preserve.

Ha! They better have more than “dogs and knives”!

Seen some big ones in Sarasota, actually all over Florida.

That's how Hawaiians pig hunt. I was thinking the same about the Florida variety. Way bigger and meaner than the small hogs on Oahu.

Dogs and hunters are all that’s needed. Knives are just carried in the pocket for cutting pieces of rope to tie up the hogs.

I consider PETA and other enviro nuts truly dangerous people. I stopped at a rest area on I 95 one night somewhere in North/Central Florida.

I was laying on a bench when a worker drove up & advised me to get in the car because packs of wild hogs lived nearby & were dangerous at night.

I did go to the car to retrieve a weapon...but the crazies who make such things happen are the real danger.

This is my neck of the woods. I find it hysterical how these bureaucrats have been wringing their hands over this. Meanwhile, this proposal has been shot down, because of 75 (75!) "angry emails" from "wildlife activists". Sounds like a good enough excuse to me! Meanwhile, these critters continue to tear up the landscape like living roto-tillers.

When I was growing up here back in the 70s, we hunted hog quite a bit. I used an old AR-15 SP1 with 55gr soft-points to great effect, and even once killed a 70-pounder with a .22lr -- 12 rounds of CCI Stinger put it down. There were rednecks who actually preferred to hunt hogs with dogs (pit bulls, usually) and knives -- the dogs would catch the critter and then the blade would apply the coup de grace. That's what they were going to allow.

These creatures are still considered vermin by Florida state law, which means open season if you find them on your land. Of course, if you land is only 200 yards from doctor's offices, you could get in trouble that way. So just be sure to use a crossbow. $:-)

"It is very cruel to the dogs and hogs."

It's not cruel to the dogs, I can tell you that. There's nothing they'd rather do. When I pull into my neighbor's drive, the hog dogs who aren't in pens jump over the tailgate of my truck, begging me to go hogging.

Better take a pair of brass balls along with the “dogs a knives”.

I live a bit south of there, and around these parts, they hunt hogs all the time. Those creatures are a severe nuisance. They are so bad that "real" ecologists want them destroyed as well. They are a non native species that is slowly taking over (look it up). They breed quickly, and eat just about anything organic. They are tough and can kill you too, nothing to snicker about. Anyone who knows about Hawaii knows what kind of devastation they can wreak upon an area.

Plus, even wild, the meat tastes great!

Someone gave a hunk of meat to my husband and even he thought it tasted bad and he always likes to try “weird” meat when we eat out. I didn’t try it.

They are all over here and they are huge.

Lots of those letters are written in dem 'war rooms' and handed out to loyal dems for their signatures. There's very little left of 'honest' on the liberal side.

Just get the emails from the commissioners (public information they Must give you).

Email each animal whacko on the list the suggestion they view a video called “Aporkalypse Now”.

Then, enjoy the sound of Libtards hyperventilating in unison.

;-)
