OTTAWA — A Conservative backbencher is demanding Canada reconsider its membership in the United Nations after the world body criticized the government for its treatment of alleged war criminals and changes to the refugee system.

Ontario MP Larry Miller said he is also upset the UN deployed a special food rapporteur to Canada last month instead of to a developing country.

“The United Nations is an organization that was designed to work collectively to solve the major problems facing the world,” Mr. Miller said in a statement. “If this is the type of action that the UN will be taking then I think that it is high time that we review our participation in the United Nations.”

All that would be necessary is for the U.S. to cut their "contribution" from 25% to 20%.

Very good. The UN is a joke. The UN just made Robert Mugabe “UN Tourism Ambassador” or some such nonsense. Every day they do something ridiculous.

Its not as though the UN is simply engaged in policies I don’t like, which they are - its that they are a corrupt, evil organization.

The UN might be picking on the wrong country at the wrong time. Harper is quite capable of turning this issue to his advantage.

Deporting war criminals and "not helping" Kadr? We can't deport war criminals fast enough for my liking. Kadr? It is just an accident of time and geography that he attacked US troops and not Canadian forces fighting in Khandahar. Let the Americans deal with him in any way they see fit.

Hunger in Canada??? The only people hungry in Canada are those too drunk to get themselves to a food bank before the weekend. And that, Jack, is a fact.

You Canadians don’t seem to understand that the UN has almost as much contempt for you as it does for the US.Being a civilized, decent and prosperous nation will earn you the UN’s disdain every time. And when you add military power to that mix you get the UN’s utter contempt for us.

I hope they go through with it. I hope a few more countries decide to follow Canada’s lead. Its time to boost NATO and defund the UN.

Go for it, Canada.

As soon as we elect congresscritters with measurable IQ and a president with any IQ at all, we’ll hopefully join you.

It is time to shut down this old cold war dinosaur. The UN is totally worthless and a huge waste of money.

The UN does nothing for us. It is a bottomless pit to throw money at and the corruption and graft is unbelievable. Time to get out of this communists controlled organization and lets do it at the same time as Canada.

The best way to mitigate the UN is to create a new body, which only *allows* in nations that are civilized, keep to their own business, refrain from socialist internationalist fantasies and religious extremism, encourage personal responsibility among their citizenry instead of government largess, and embrace Common Law as superior to the repugnant French Code Civil.

Nations with these characteristics do not exist.

Therefore, such a body would be populated by private individuals and companies, and designed with the idea of mutual encouragement to bring about nations that embrace such ideas.

UN - United Nothing

We should start off by moving the U.N. off of American soil.

Cheers...Chris
