Warming nears point of no return, scientists say ( .. and then We'RE REallY ReallY DooMeD!!)

The Earth is reaching a "tipping point" in climate change that will lead to increasingly rapid and irreversible destruction of the global environment unless its forces are controlled by concerted international action, an international group of scientists warns.

Unchecked population growth, the disappearance of critical plant and animal species, the over-exploitation of energy resources, and the rapidly warming climate are all combining to bring mounting pressure on the Earth's environmental health, they say.

Scientists from five nations, led by UC Berkeley biologist Anthony Barnosky, report their analysis Thursday in the journal Nature.

They likened the potential impact of the forces to previous major changes - both gradual and abrupt - in the planet's history that triggered mass extinctions and expansions, and produced completely new worldwide environments.

The most recent of those was the sporadic end of the last ice age that began 14,000 years ago and shifted rapidly from warm to cold and then back to warm again over a few thousand years. That period saw the extinction of half the world's large animal life, and then the spread of an expanding human population to every continent on the planet.

Difficult to reverse

A similar "critical transition" is occurring now, Barnosky's scientists maintain, and they warn that once it starts, it will be "extremely difficult or even impossible for the system to return to its previous state."

Is this one of those WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE articles? I mean we’re all gonna die, but how much propaganda/money can the scientists and government milk out of this new and improved research.

Critical Transition eh....?

I guess the lack of sunspots in the 24th cycle plus the sun's magnetic field splitting should be good for about 400 years of ice age.

The latest sunspot cycle is the weakest in 100 years.

Weak sunspot cycles historically are accompanied by an increase in Solar Flares .

Here is a time-lapse video of the Sun throughout the up and coming cycle 25. Watch with amazement, as it incredibly changes rapidly from record low to Maunder-like peak during this looping video:

Quick, give the UN taxation authority and centralized control over the globe’s means of production - oil.

If you don’t, they won’t be able to turn down the earth’s temp gage and it will be all your fault when everyone dies. gag

The earth was a lot warmer in the past. How can that be?

These morons! Try reading a friggin' geology/paleontology book! About 90% of life on earth has been wiped out several times over the past 350 million years, and that's not to mention what plant and animal species are "critically endangered" everytime the Yellowstone Caldera pops like a giant volcanic zit and covers half the Continental US in ash every 600,000 years or so, which has been going for what, the last 30 or 40 million years? I forget, but something like that.

The last time about half of Florida was underwater was what, 120,000 years ago? About 100,000 years later (that would be about 20,000 years ago), sea levels were so low that Forida was TWICE the size that it is now.

ANYBODY presuming to "save the planet" by protecting beaches and wetlands is a conceited, ignorant lulu. Regardless of what mankind does or doesn't do in the next ten centuries, sooner or later all those beaches are going to be well underwater -- AGAIN. When it comes to climate, we don't control the climate, it controls us.

Furthermore, we couldn't even recognize, let alone manipulate, a significant climate change trend in the context of "normal" weather shifts amortized over hundreds of millions of years, if it bit us on the ass.

Once we have reached the tipping point and we are doomed for good will they shut up about it?

OK Mr.Scientist. What is the plan? How do we fix this?

I just thought about how we fix this. Everyone in the world should give us their money. We have the best scientists and can bring technology to market quicker. Only makes sense that we save the world.

Fiest things first. Move the UN to Gaza.

The U.S. is a nation of 300 million citizens and 30 million illegals.

Before imposing draconian regulations on this 330 million people, get the other 6 billion souls on the planet in line and green first.

Barnosky, who tracks longtime changes in the fossil record, and 22 other scientists spent two years in conferences and research to produce their review.

If that is the case, then he knows fully well that the earth always undergoes climate transitions, and is well aware that the change in species that inhabit the earth always accompanies those transitions. I'll have to look at the Nature report if I can, and see if it has the same alarmist language as this article, because that language just isn't warranted.

Sorry, I left off the sarcasm tag. Point was, that cycle 25 is expecting virtually NO sunspots, from minima to maxima of the cycle.

I'm really getting tired of this. For 20 years they've been telling us we have two more years to embrace communism and release Algore's shakras or it will be too late to save the world. The the deadline comes, is met with a collective yawn, and nothing happens. THEN, you'll notice the deadline gets adjusted to still be in the future. Now if only we embrace communism and release Gore's shakras by 2004, we're screwed. Then 2006, then 2008 and so on. Somebody needs to crack down on these snake oil salesmen and insist they pick a date and publicly own it, and after that date passes, no more access to the airwaves. Either it's too late, or it was a scam in the first place.
